And I was just thinking....gee Pete had to go and post those beautiful roses and make my shots look like crap. I sit here and look at these shots on a big monitor while editing....they look sharp, well focused and composed...and then I post them and wonder what the hell happened to that nice shot. Compression has killed a few of my shots...but your roses look stellar Pete. Sid has posted some lovely ones too. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh....perhaps we really are our own worst critics...or maybe I really do post crap!

Hehe.

To tell the truth, all I did with these recent rose shots is import them, apply a capture sharpen and resize to 1024px and post them up.

o Such is my faith in the 1D Mk II N and Canon 100mm Macro lens.

o Or I'm just way too lazy to post process properly...

You tick the box as applicable... :D

I copied my capture sharpen settings from a book.

Create a new layer, set the opacity to 66%

USM:-
Amount 400%
Radius 0.5
Threshold 0

You're supposed to adjust the opacity of the sharpen layer to suit, but I hardly ever bother.

Being capture sharpen, this is on the full resolution image.

That's basically it.

I have three actions attached to F1, F2, F3

F1 - Capture Sharpen
F2 - Flatten Image (since I occasionally use Viveza and other processing that creates new layers)
F3 - convert to sRGB, resize to fit 1200x1200 pixels and save as a jpg in my drop-box folder to be uploaded.

That workflow is applied to about 70% of my shots I display here.

What a post-processing master-class, eh? ;)

I read that capture sharpening is only very slight. It just counteracts the softening caused by the anti-aliasing filter on the sensor. So, on that basis, I don't mind using it as the starting point for pretty much all my shots. It's certainly slight enough not to be immediately noticeable (especially when the sharpening is done on the full res file).

For creative sharpening, I'll do what I can to only apply it to very specific areas of the image. I don't like the "oversharpened" look either. I'd rather things look softer rather than unnaturally sharp.
