Canon S230 AVI movie file

I tried to move my Canon AVI movie files over to Adobe Premiere 6 and I get the following error message:
Unable to open that file.
File uses an unsupported compression format.
Any ideas?

I'm not an expert on Adobe Premier 6 but it sounds like you need to get a plug in type piece of software for Premier so it can open your AVI files. Do you have the most recent version of Apple QuickTime? I use it to open and view my AVI's and they come up fine. Have you tried ArcSoft VideoImpression 3, it will open AVI's aswell, I got it along with my A40.

I went to the Canon Camera web site. I was advised to type in Google search "M-JPEG" and I found a company called Morgan Multimedia.com. I downloaded their free 60 day trial of M3jpegV3, and now I am able to bring my .AVI files to Adobe Premiere and work on them.

It seems to mee that this forum could use a FAQ. This question comes up numerous times in various forums so the answer is not available unless you are looking in that specific forum.

Plus, it is only $18 (although $99 for commercial full version) for the non-commercial license vs $35 for Morgan's codec.

I also do use VirtualDub to rotate my G1 .avi files.

But it always seems to me that I get a lot of loss in image quality with this codec: PICmjpeg.

Of course, I can screw quality up to 20 (the maximum offered by this codec) - but this also results in a maximum of filesize i.e. about 20 MB for a 3 or 4 MB G1.avi.

As much as I understand the principle of a MJPEG file, wouldn't it be possible to get a LOSSLESSLY rotated file?

For example, ACDSEE makes losslessly transformed .jpg files.
And as MJPEG is only a collection of .jpg files (15 per second), this seems very likely that somewhere out there is a little coder guy who already did this job??

I'd really appreciate this very much because I of course only want to archive my rotated files, and therefore wonder if this .avi rotating by not losing any quality has already been implemented by anyone out there.
