Looked on eBay and found a ton of Zenitar 16mm and Peleng 8mm Lenses for auction. The Zenitars were running in the $220 (USD) shipped from like Russia. The Pelengs were in the $400 range shipped, again from over the water.

The Peleng site had "buy it now" or "make an offer" options. So I made an offer of $275 shipped. making note that I could buy a Zenitar for like $225. They countered my offer with a price of $389 shipped. Noting that "this was Peleng not a Zenitar."

I rejected the counter offer. Am I wrong? Is the $400 a good/fair price tag for this lens?

No.

You can get a better fisheye for that price, even if used.

$389 Shipped seems like about as good of a deal as you're going to find for the Peleng. As to whether or not its worth is your decision. I personally would get the Tokina 10-17 FE for $120 more.

EDIT: Looks like the Tokina went up about $60 at B&H in the last month or so. Ouch.

It goes in cycles. For a while, the Zenitar was selling for about $150, and the Peleng was just over $200 at the same time. The demand for fisheyes has kinda picked up since then, hence the price increases. I had a Peleng for short while, as well as a Zenitar...both were fairly decent, but there's no way I'd pay close to $400 for a Peleng.

Technically, only you can say if you were wrong or not. (I hate those answers, btw. :p )

Anyway, if you rejected their counter-offer, then you obviously felt it was not worth their asking price. Nothing wrong with that.

Thanks. I guess the question was rather rhetorical.

I'll just bide my time and maybe I can pickup a better lens used for about the same price.

Why don't you look into the Vivitar (Samyang, Opteka, same-same) fisheye lens. I have the 7/3.5 and it is well worth the money, and was less.

But isn't it better to revive an old thread than to start a new one on the same topic?

I hate doing a search for something and finding a bunch of treads that just repeat all the same information...

Dead thread, guys.

This underscores the POTN hypocrisy. You can't make a new thread on a topic that that has been rehashed since the start of POTN and you can't revive a previously made thread on that same topic without having at least 1 member make a remark about the topic being previously discussed or to go search or to comment on the resurrection of the thread.

I don't think it's that so much as responding to the OP as though the situation is current. I imagine if someone revived an old thread by saying something like, "I did a search and came up with this thread and thought I'd revive it because I'm in the same situation...." It would not be an issue.
