My buddy came over with his soft box and gave me a quick lesson. C&C welcome and appreciated, it will help me learn. This was taken with a small softbox and a shoot through umbrella, iso100, f4.5,1/250 sec with the 50mm 1.4

What a clown you are!!!! :D

Thanks for your help the other night, and for bringing over your soft-box and equipment I learned a lot from you.

I'm really surprised to see so few responses in this section to these shots, Ithought they turned out pretty good.

Keith

Hiya Keith. Looks like some fun times, and learning is a great process, isn't it? I learn lots of new stuff everyday...and don't think I'll stop, till I drop. :)

I'll comment on the second image. Your main light was a little too low. Had you placed it higher, camera left, the catchlight would be in the 11 o'clock position. This would elimiate the shadow caused by her shirt. The umbrella (I presume) on camera right creates a nice hairlight...but, maybe a tad more power to bring out her hair.

Secondly, there's a slight magenta/red cast to your photo, at least on my end. I believe a white balance correction would solve that issue. I believe the grey in the background should be rendered just that...grey (as in the first image...very fun shot!).

Lastly, the expression. I find it 'so' tough to get the right expression out of people modeling for me, that it's hurtful at times. The first picture is great in that regard. The second one...well, doesn't compare to the first one. ;) I've found talking to girls about silly things, or just being silly myself, leads to more smiles and a more relaxed atmosphere. ;)

Nonetheless, I feel you did a very nice job and you learned some things, in the process or trial and error. I'm no pro., but, I hope I helped somewhere along the line. ;)

Cheers,
M.

Bring the light much closer. It will make the catchlights in her eyes nice and big.

In this image the softbox was to my right about 3 feet from the baby.

Thanks. I appreciate the kindness. :) There's plenty out there that are better than I. I'm just a small fish, in a big sea. ;)

I'll look forward to the next set of collaborative pics. ;)

I like the pose and lighting on the first photo but the visible curve of the paper bothers me. It's hard to tell how far she is from the background, but often moving away from the background will fix this. It's also an easy fix in Photoshop. :)

As for the suggestion to move the light closer, I ran into a lot of problems with this when I was starting out. Due to the inverse square law of light, the brightness of the subject is not linear with the distance from the light. The problem I ran into is that with the light really close I would get one photo with the proper exposure, one where they were overexposed, one where they were underexposed all without changing settings or lighting. Finally realized they were moving just slightly towards or away from the light an d it was enough to change the exposure drastically. They were only moving 6" but it was enough. Moving the light back a foot fixed the problem.
