I'm a casual user, wanting to improve flash performance on G2. Looking for input & ideas. Researched Speedlight 220 EX and HF-DC-1 High Power Slave. Don't know if either of these are good choices for my situation. Interested if anyone has other recommedations as well. I also looked at the extension cords to move the flash away from camera.

I'm trying to solve three problems. 1) Redeye (even with G2's Redeye Reduction feature enabled), and 2) Not enough flash power from a distance (my application is primarily taking larger group pictures at the kids school/sports/scouting events from a distance of 20 - 40 feet) and 3) Shadows in closer in portraits.

I've read through the threads, & didn't find anything that fit my questions directly - hope some of you pros out there can help a rank amateur :)

I'd recommend a Speedlite 550EX or 580EX (if price is not a primary concern). The flashes you're considering are not very powerful comparatively.

Thanks, I looked at that, but I'm trying to keep my costs $<200 for the flash. I haven't seen anyone reference the HF-DC-1 on this forum - heard of it? Do you think the 220 would be a waste of $ vs. the higher end models?

The out of production 380 EX would be a possible good candidate for a low cost EX series flash. Better than the 220, IMHO, and you might find an inexpensive one on ebay. ;)

Many thanks for the info. It's great to pick the brains of you experienced folk.

As a casual user, I'm trying to keep cost, weight, & travel size down, and the other units seem to be an extra $75 - 100 bucks, & probably more important, are larger to carry. How much better do you think the 220 is vs. the built-in flash on the camera? Will it extend my range by 10 - 20 feet? If I get a remote/extension cord, does it work in conjunction with the built-in, or just replace it?

Also, Has you heard of or used the Canon HF-DC-1 remote units? They look pretty low end, wondering if they are a waste.

Again, Many thanks!
