A simple poll - If you have a 1D3/1Ds3 or have used a 1D3/1Ds3 please respond to the poll to record your personal experience regarding oily "donut" spots on the sensor - not the usual dust spots.

Here is an example of Canon's service notice with respect to the phenomenon....

http://www.canon.co.uk …993&page=1&type=important (external link)

The poll will run for 90 days.

FWIW the reason for the poll is that I do not understand Canon's logic in issuing this service notice. Unlike the complaints about AF performance I have not seen anything reported in forums or blogs indicating widespread problems with oil spots on the sensor. i.e. there does not appear to be a systemic worldwide problem. So why has Canon raised the issue? I do not know. I am curious to know what experiences fellow POTN members have. Is there a real problem or is it all in Canon's corporate mind?

Here's my 1D3 sensor at f/32. I have not wet cleaned or even puffed my sensor in five months of ownership. I'm happy with my camera..

Emphasising dust/oil by increasing exposure by 2 stops and deepening blacks substantially. Even viewed at 100%, none of these marks look like oil, just normal dust....

There have been reports on POTN and even for that small number, its an issue. Since they are likely to only come from a production or service process at Canon, they are bound to issue advice to potential sufferers. It's easy to determine if the problem is present.

But... bear in mind that not every Canon MKIII owner worldwide frequents these boards. Not every Ford owner joins the Ford discussion forum. Some MKIII owners just take pictures and keep the good ones and put the bad ones down to experience. Good as it is, living on this forum can make you very nervous:p. I can introduce you to MKIII owners who - to this day - are completely unaware of the recent recalls for problems that we on POTN now believe must have been on every camera body.

I think that theres just not that many people who've had issues with it to be honest...I mean usually people who get mad and have a problem are apt to write about it and complain, and i truthfully rarely see anyone here **** about the 1D MkIII..

As mentioned in my own thread somewhere, is this a "new" event on account of the servicing? Many thanks. :)

Haven't seen spots on my Mk3 sensor. Did see them once on my Mk2 sensor. Cleaned off easily enough ;)

The pics is small, but it looks like I have oil spots. What do you think?

The picture is really too small to be sure. I can see faint spots but I can't tell whether they are oily donuts or regular dust. You've only stopped down to f/6.3 for this example so that does little to show the spots at their worst. Try stopping down to f/22 or more and then see what you get. Note that my example shot was at f/32. You might also try boosting the contrast massively in your software to emphasise the spots that are there.

The oil spots are supposed to have a sort of ring/donut shape, probably because they are perfectly round and maybe act as a mini lens that creates its own little focusing effect. Ordinary dust is just a sort of nondescript blob.
