Cycling - 70-300 or 70-200 with 1.4 t-con?

Hi all,

Searched for this but found nothing. I'm planning on shooting a cycling criterium next Sunday. Should be plenty of light. My options are 70-300mm EF f4 or 70-200mm f2.8 with 1.4 teleconverter.

Which would yield best results for long shots? I know i'm going to lose a stop with the t-con, which would put me almost in the range of the 7-300mm.

cycling is very accessable. I shoot most of my stuff with my 24-105 and 16-35. Of the two you list I would go with the 70-200.

I agree with Dan-o. The 70-200, plus a 1.4 extender, is a faster and sharper lens than the 70-300, albeit much heavier. That does not mean, however, that you would not like the results of the 70-300.

All you need is the 70-200. The 70-300 is garbage and you won't need an extender- a previous poster said cycling is accessible and that's true.

Think about the circuit that they are to ride. Can you get close to them when they are forced to ride slowly? (steep uphill? tight turns?) Or is it a wide open, fast route where you can't get very close? (industrial park or open farm roads)

If it's sunny, then I can shoot 400mm at 5.6 and 1250 with my 40D and get good results. Not a problem. If it's cloudy or raining then you may need the faster lens combo.
