what u mean with hobbled? and it could not have been done because apple didnt allow it in their sdk but now with SDK 3.0 where controll of peripherals is possible it should be able! dont forget the iphone is Mac OS X, it is a full computer operating system. with all respect Johnny if you are not an iphone programmer dont state it cant be done. i am already programming and it is amazing what all can be done. if Canon would give me the specific usb controller funktion it can be implemented into an iphone app. i already talked to onOne and they are actually already in the process to make this happen since with SDK 3.0 it IS possible :)

Can you load Photoshop on the iPhone? No... It's not a full operating system.

OK lets see how it goes...

Mark1 great! so if this is possible, then all we need to do is work on the iphone app side (i am learning to programm for iphone) and send him the right codes to connect directly to the camera wireless receiver and send the functions. then we dont need a pc/mac anymore inbetween! :)

I have not had time to build the remote yet. But plan on it as soon as I do have a few spare minutes. I would end up shooting this way all the time.

You don't need to work on the app side for control, other than focus control. You need to work on the camera side. There has to be something running the server software to use the app directly. It needs to convert the signals into commands The camera itself will not do it. The ideal way is to have a small imbeded computer that just plugs in to the USB. Some thing that works like a kids electronic game. Just turn it on and it runs. no booting, no choices, just work. Like a calculator. Turn it in and it calculates. We need a box that just turns on and broadcasts images/ receives control commands. In other words a WFT grip. But this is what we are working on here to avoid buying.

An expensive thought would be have a iPod touch run the server. As Apple has opened up the dock connector to developers. Im sure someone will make a connector --> mini USB wire soon.

ok johnny v your example of photoshop on an iphone is just ridiculous and shows that you dont understand programming and computers in general. can u install photoshop on linux or better on UNIX? no because it is not made for it. same with iphone. there are apps out there which are doing a similar thing as photoshop for iphone. there are small apps which can do some kind of layering and some kind of masking and picture editing.
ppl have even put Need for Speed or Sims3 or Sim City on an iphone. so please your comparison just embarrasses you.

today was a photo fair in england where i had a long chat with one onone technition and he said they are working on it. they are even working on a solution to connect the iphone with usb/serial directly to canon/nikon cams.
and Mark1 i see your point but i dont think that that is needed. if your wireless dongle that u build for 50$ can just relay the commands send from the computer then it is the computer who needs to send the right commands. same with iphone. iphone needs to send the right commands. Canon has a wirelss extension for D50 or D5 not sure. and with it you can controll from a computer over WWW protocol the camera.
i know this solution will come i just wanted it to have before onone will do it and costs maybe a lot.
anyway. Mark1 do you have a good instruction how to build this 50$ wireless dongle? thx

Why the personal attack? I never attacked you?

Funny.... When I'm not shooting... I'm a computer tech in NYC, install Mac systems, teach Photoshop/Lightroom/Capture One, color management and workflow flow in general. Among other things...

Anyway with that said... hope you can do it... I'll be the first to buy your product.

You are right. The iphone needs to send the right comands, and probably has the ability to do so. The problem is with the hardware. We have to mix all this stuff toagther to make it work. Basicaly we are fitting one adapter on the end of another adapter so we can make this adapter fit to that adapter.... We can short cut all of this if there was a self powered, mini usb, wifi dongle. But there is not, so we have to do the adapter thing.

I guess nobody went back to the origional blog and saw the power adapters he has made. one is very simple. And no, I dont have any instructions for it. I was going to follow the origional blog. I like the way he did it.

We need to inject power into this some how. It may make it easier.http://www.tca-inc.net/usbmatousbbf.html (external link)

Great thread!

May give this a go.

ETA: Has anybody that has actually fab'd one of these done any true indoor and/or outdoor distance tests?

TIA
