I've been doing a fair amount of HDR lately, all handheld. Have been using 50D fast continuous shooting with a +/- 1.5 auto exposure compensation setting, then combining the images in Photomatix. Here are a few examples.

They are not perfect -- I get a bit of artifacting at times, but I am pretty happy with the results.
