So I just got my 50D last week. Having had 20Ds/30D and using various Rebel bodies, I'm wondering how the 50D's autofocus systems stacks up to other cameras.

With very basic testing, the 50D seems to lock on focus much better than the cameras I've used.

So what about 1D bodies? or 5D (and 5D II)?

I've had the 30d/5d and 1d/1ds and can tell you that the 1d bodies are much faster and acurate to aquire focus when using the outer focus points than the 30d/5d. However, I'd be very curious to see how the 50D stacks up when using those points.

I've had multiple bodies and the 50D clearly focuses faster and more accurately than any of my previous bodies. I've had the joy of shooting a MKIII several times and the 50D falls short. There is a lot to be said about a true pro-focus system.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

From my limited testing the outer points seem to do much better than the 30D.

Did the 5D and 30D seem to be similiar?

Does anyone out there have a 5D II and 5D to any comparisons?

Or a 5D II and a 50D?

I do not have either the 5d or 5d II right now. I have a 1DsII and a 1DII but have considered trading the 1DII off for a 50D for the smaller body option I just don't know if I'll be OK with the 50D AF.

To be fair, I shoot mostly weddings/portraits so the 1D af may be overkill for me but now that I have it I'm not sure I want to go back.

I've really only had this past weekend with my 50D (and even that time was limited) but so far I'm impressed with the focus system. It's not really a fair assesment so I hope to be able to really put it through some tests.
