Little intro: I've always used dual screen computing. I cannot work without it, no matter how big the screen is, I need a second one to organize windows per screen (with UltraMon) and just stash none-active windows on.

I'm currently using a 17" Samsung 172x and a Iiyama 19" monitor together, both at 1280x1024. I used to have the samsung x2, but one died, and since the samsung was no longer available when my second one died, I replaced that with the most budget 19" I could find, as a temporary solution.

I'm now looking for two new monitors, preferably somewhere around 19-22" and not extreme widescreen, though a little wide is ok.

I came across the Dell 2209WA, which seems like a perfect upgrade. I'm considering buying two of these and a Newstar dual monitor bracket (external link) (though the Dell foot already seems great, so not 100% sure if they'd need it).

Would this be overkill in size on my desk - compared to the current situation? They're relatively affordable, especially for IPS panels. My current screens are kind of pissing me off with their very limited foot (not adjustable in height) and the 19" makes a beeping sound... I'm not sure how much of a visual improvement this IPS panel would be, but when processing my pictures, I do tend to see some differences between my monitors at the moment, so I think this might be a worthwile improvement...

Any ideas or suggestions regarding this?

I love my 22" Dell. That said, if I had two of them they would take up my whole desk, and I have a large desk. The stand on the monitor is excellent! You can raise and lower the monitor, pivot left to right, etc.

Thanks, that thing looks awesome :D

However, I'm not sure I could "downgrade" from having 2 x 1280 by 1024 to having 1680 x 1050 (or so)... I'd miss too much working space :p

Looks like I'm gonna have to roll some dice to decide between 2 of those beauties or a new lens...

Thinking about it some more I think I could squeeze another monitor on my desk. You might want to construct one out of cardboard to see how big it would be. You might find that 2 20" monitors would be better, but for about $450 it would be an awesome setup. There are a couple of people that ordered two of the monitors. You might see if they can snap a pic for you. Check out the budget thread to see who bought 2.

Hmm, actually, I don't really mind if my entire wall would be monitors... :D

Tempted to order two at once (and asking the store to look for models from the same batch) because it will limit the risk of getting slight variations. As for size, I think my desk is about the same width and perhaps a tiny bit deeper, but without the corner in it. Adding the dual-monitor arm will give me back some desk space underneath them though, just have to figure out the correct weight (or rather, if 15kg will hold both - without the foot).

I love the cardboard idea, I think I'll actually go try that to see where they'd end up :D

Hmm, I didn't find a 20" version with IPS panel yet, but I think the ultrasharp 2009W is a TN panel... If I had the choice to go for an identical 20" version I'd take that, but the 22" version looks like the way to go now (after my car get's it's yearly maintenance :D )

Just put one in portrait mode. Better yet, get 2 extra and put them BOTH in portrait mode!

I don't think its overkill. Seems like a rockin setup.

On a related note, hows the dell 22" with ips panel compare the apple cinema display 20"?

I got the apple quite cheap, but wondering if the dell would be better...

Welcome to the ultrawidescreen club (proud owner of 1920x1200 and 1080p 24"ers here)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

That's not an IPS panel.

Dynamic Contrast Ratio: 3000:1 (typical)
300cd/m2 luminance (brightness) (typical)
6-millisecond response time (typical)

To have 6 milisecond on a IPS panel you have to pay around 15oo$.

The Dell 2209WA is an e-IPS panel. This has been confirmed for quite some time.
