Could this be an immature 'male' Ruby-throated hummingbird, or bad lighting on my part. All the shots I got of him today he does'nt have the red throat. A little soft but wanted to see what you all thought.

canonloader Cream of the Crop More info | May 19, 2009 17:22 | #2 Cheryl, at this time of year, there are no immature birds. This is an adult male. You can only see the bright red gorget feathers when the light is just right. Cute little guy. He came North first, to fight other males for territory. The females will come later and stay longer. He will start back South at the end of summer, to leave the females and new juvies more food for them to gain weight for the flight South. They won't leave until well into fall, sometimes after the first frost. Hummers have one of the most amazing migration stories of any birds. Mitch- ____...^.^...____

May 19, 2009 18:05 | #3 Thankyou Mitch, guess I'll have to wait & catch him in better light. We always get a few around here, & it's interesting to see the males 'fighting' over territory. Cheryl
