im looking into getting a new camera. i would love to take great clear shots. i have been doing research on this camera and i feel this is a good camera for me. my question is..is there a big difference and is it worth it to get the PowerShot SX10 IS or spend an extra $200 for the PowerShot SX1 IS? i belive it is called. i know that you can take 1080 video with it, and i also belive you can take pics while taking video. does the PowerShot SX10 IS take pics while taking video. I am pretty much a beginner in the photo taking. i am coming from a kodak easyshare cx7530 tha i am now going to retire to taking it on the trail while four wheeling. i loved that camera, but am looking to take better pics. i dont know a lot about cameras, but i know that optical zoom is good, and u dont need more then 10 megapixels, and thats about it. thanks guys

also, is there a setting which will take several shots right after another by itself to get good action shots on the PowerShot SX10 IS, or does it do that on the PowerShot SX1 IS

Buy the SX1 ONLY if you need full-HD movie recording.

I can't compare the SX10 and SX1, as I've never so much as even seen an SX1 in real life. The SX10 will take photos during video, but you'll get a brief black frame and hear the sound of the photo being taken on the video. The optical zoom also works while recording video. With all that said, I'll admit that I'm going strictly upon what reviews and other people have said, as I haven't even tried the video feature in my SX10 - if I want to shoot video, I'll use an actual video camera.

The SX10 does have a "burst" mode, but the speed is ~1.6 fps - not exactly fast enough to capture multiple frames of fast-moving sports. I could be wrong, but I believe the SX1 has the same fps/burst speed as the SX10.

Actually, the SX1 has 4 fps burst mode. Was not a reason for me to spend an extra $250 over the SX10 though.

I sold my SX10 to my sister when the SX1 was released in the US (I wanted RAW), so I have experience with both.

Both can take stills while you're shooting video. However, the video will be interrupted for however long it takes to capture the still photo. If you're outdoors this won't be much of an issue, but I was filming indoors with the SX10 once and getting 1/8-1/15 sec. exposures; the video froze a couple of frames with the still capture in place (understandable when you think about it - there's only one sensor to capture the image, and if you're taking an 1/8 sec. still you're going to lose 4 frames at 30 fps).

The SX1 is rated (by Canon) at 4 fps (without refocusing or re-metering between shots) vs. 1.4 fps for the SX10 (Large JPEG for both); it's also faster (1.1 vs. 0.7 fps) when AF between shots and (1.2 vs. 0.8 fps) when metering between shots. If you shoot RAW in the SX1, expect the performance to be worse due to the buffer not being able to cope.

RAW is basically the straight, unrefined signal from your camera's sensor. You can process it on the computer to extract a greater tonal range, reduce noise, and seamlessly change white balance among other things, so it gives you much more flexible control over your pictures, especially in difficult conditions.
