It cant be just me, I know you guys out there must be experiencing, or have experienced a grinding focus ring...

let me explain...on both my 17-55 AND my 85 1.8, when I turn the focus ring 360 degrees, parts of the turn feel and sound as if there is "something" under there, it's not a loud sound, but if you put your ear to it you can hear it, and as you are turning the ring, you can feel the "grind". I compared the rings to my old 28-135, and the 28-135 was smooth like butter.

are you guys experiencing the same thing with your lenses? or is it just me

(and for those of you who are going to say, "just don't manual focus", stop it :) )

I can hear the focus ring on my 17-55 if I put my ear up to it, but I wouldn't call it "grinding". It's the sound of the friction between the ring and the barrel, about the same as the sound of running your finger over a piece of printer paper. A smooth hiss, I guess.

Does that help?

I do with my 17-40 f/4L, but then I had it pretty much glued to my camera for 14 weeks of basic training, and it's probably sand from one of the three weeks it spent in the field

hmmm. Ive never exposed my lenses to sand of any kind, but I guess it could be. I feared that it was a gear or something going bad. Im going to call canon and complaint about their quality control, get them to clean it out for free.

ok, so just to update everyone. I sent out my lens to Canon on May 30th. Canon received it, and had it since June 1st, which I just got back today. Here is the note from the Tech:

We have examined the product according to your request, and, it was found that the part was inoperative. the unit did not funciton properly from time to time. The barrelassy.external was replaced. Checked all, adjusted center/tilt/focus, cleaned all factory specs.

Now Im happy :)
