I know the 5Dm2 will not have the precision and adjustment speed of a 1D series body in continuous focus, but I wonder how it fares against the 50D.

So for anyone who currently has, or has had both, how do they compare with each other in continuous mode? For instance, is the 5Dm2 "slower" to adjust focus than the 50D?

Am I mistaken in saying the AF module of the 5Dm2 is the same used in the 50D, 40D, etc?

I don't plan on shooting sports with the 5Dm2 (thus my 1D body), just the standard candids of kids and possibl street shooting.

Thanks in advance for anyone that can objectively compare the two!

They are different. The outer AF points on the 40D/50D are all cross type, which means they're sensitive to both vertical and horizontal contrast. When using the center AF point in one shot mode, the 5D and 50D would be very closely matched.

I don't shoot in AI Servo much, but the 5D has 6 invisible AF assist points surrounding the center AF point, which is to help track subjects. Since the 40D/50D doesn't have this, the 5D has an advantage there.

5D's AF config:

^Yep.
Center AF point is in fact probably almost as good as my 1DMKIII.

I've had very good experience using 5D2 in AI Servo mode. It works very well especially with center point selected as AF point.

Can't compare it to 50D, since I've never had one, but 20D is nowhere close to 5D2 in AI Servo AF performance. Regular AF speed and precision is considerably better too (on all AF points).

this is all perfect info to hear...thnx much

So why the grumbles though about the 5Dm2 having slow AF performance in general? The most consistent one is the apparent issue when focusing in low light. Maybe the caveat is that it was being compared to the 1D series and not to the xxD series?

Is this just one of those internet rumors that somehow gained momentum?

The non cross type outer sensors on the 5DII are not as sensitive as they could be and tend to hunt in low light. The irony is that the outer sensors are especially critical when using fast primes in low light (due to focus/recompose error and shallow dof).

The only edge the 50D has is the cross-type outer sensors. In terms of sensitivity and speed, it's no more sensitive and no faster than the 5D2.

Many people confuse basic sensitivity with the all-directional advantage of the cross sensor, not understanding that the linear sensors are only sensitive to contrast lines running perpendicular to the orientation of the sensor.

If you turn the outer sensors of the 5D2 perpendicular to a contrast line, you will see that it's actually extremely sensitive--down to the point you can no longer even see anything through the viewfinder.
