Hope this question is not misplaced, but does anyone know...if i were to buy a vector file from istock, would i be able to open and edit it in PS3?

No. I have Illustrator 10 and CS2, so I just checked. You can see the vector file (.ai), but CS2 converts it into a PDF, so no you can't edit it. I'm sure it's the same thing using CS3.

Yes, you can edit it, but only as a raster file, as far as I'm aware. It will no longer be in vector format. So, you'll be losing some of the benefits of a vector file, but that may not be a problem for you. If, for example, you are preparing artwork for your website, then it will need to end up in pixel form anyway.

You can import a vector file as a shape layer AFAIK...

hmmm...so how about opening a new file, setting the resolution to like 300 or 1000dpi, then importing the file. I really just need to trace the outline.

Well, in that case, just open it (and set the resolution in the rasterize options). It should come in on a transparent background, then you can simply Ctrl-click on the layer (in the layers palette) to automatically select the shape.

You can also use the place command. It should work fine for what you want.
