Whats a good film camera to buy? I was thinking about taking a class or two and they are prob going to require a film slr. Oh and of course it has to be a canon ;). I dont want to spend to much but I also would like a decent camera. Any advice?

Do you want an old school camera with no features or a new film body with all sorts of features?

Old school: AE-1 (have one, love it for what it is). FD mount with lots of cheap old MF lenses available.

New school: EOS-3 (have one, sweet features like "eye control", love it). EF mount allows you to use current EF mount lenses.

Check KEH.com for an old EOS 630 or Elan II. Both very capable cameras.
Plus your 17-40 will blow you away on a full frame body.

Lets you change focus point with your eye. I hear it work "OK".

I would agree that it wasn't the greatest feature but it was quite innovative at the time.

+1 for eye control not being so great. It was neat, but for me it couldn't figure out where I was looking about a quarter of the time.

I have an Elan II. Got it from Keh for $35. If you won't be shooting film a lot it'll fit the bill quite nicely. If you plan on shooting a lot of film then go with an EOS 3 or better.

Pretty much this post sums it up. Afterall, film bodies have no sensor, so a newer film won't necessarily produce better IQ.

A 100% manual camera has it's advantages too... no need for battery (only for exposure meter) for taking pictures. That means it can take all the rain and snow you want.

I bought an old Canon EOS 10 I found on eBay for £35. Very nice camera, 5fps continuous, works nicely with all my EF lenses. Only trouble I had was a decayed shutter bumper, but I managed to get that goo out and it works great.

(Having said that, I now frequent charity shops, car boot sales and junk auctions. I got a Vivtar kit for £20 in one shop (a manual body, 28, 50 and 135mm lenses, plus a 2× teleconverter and a flashgun). Later, at a Scouts auction, I picked up: a Pentax P30N with 28-80mm lens, flashgun and case; a Praktica MTL-5 body with 28, 35, 50, 135 and 80-210mm M42-mount lenses and a 2-3× variable teleconverter; a Canon camcorder; a few 35mm compacts; and a digital compact --- all for £8! Moral of story: Look around!)

Canon EOS 60D :: Canon EOS 7D :: Canon EOS 10 :: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM :: Manual-focus Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM :: Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

EOS 3 is a much newer film body on the Canon line. I just picked up a used Canon EOS 1n and I am having the time of my life shooting film again... If someone wants my EOS 630 I would part with it for a small price, but would only do so locally!

Better AF, build, etc. Not that it really matters all that much.
