A new Canon 40D with a new Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, or

a new Canon 50D with a used (in very good condition) Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM?

And why?

New/used.... it's the same lens, barring any mishandling by the original owner.

So the real question is between the 40D and 50D. If I didn't have the 40D, I'd go for the 50D. Since I have the 40D, I don't see the 50D as worth upgrading to.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Same price? Go for the 50D combo.

As said, same price, get the 50D, higher ISO's and the screen should be nice touches.

If they are the same price or really close to the same price from a reputable seller (used, look for good online feedback and history) then I would go for the 50D.

The 50D combo will more than likely wind up being the same price, and potentially a little less.

Thank you for your input.

Yeah, the 50D screen alone is way better.. I upgraded to a 5D II (from a 40D) and the screen is SIGNIFICANTLY better...

how about a used 50d and save up for nicer glass?

go full frame!

I'd get the 50D and used 17-55 just for the microadjustment feature.

I hate to go against the grain here but I would rather have my 40D than the 50D.
I have had the chance to use a 50D and it is a great camera but it seems the 40D is still getting a lot of attention.
I had a conversation this afternoon at the camera store about the 40D vs the 50D.
They are selling more 40Ds and the some of the folks that traded up the 50D have came back to reclaim their 40D body.

I would look into the prices of refurbished lenses and cameras.

I have had extremely good results purchasing refurbished (factory refurbished by Canon) equipment and would go that route if I needed/wanted different equipment and refurbs were available.

I agree. I have owned both the 40D and the 50D. I still have the 40D.

Edit: Some reasons: dynamic range, aperture before diffraction becomes an issue, ISO performance

And why?

This. If for no other reason than the micro-adjustment capability alone.
