I have recently purchased a Canon XSI and am enjoying this new hobby. I have the kit lens ( 18-55 ) and a 50 / 1.8. I also have a couple of older lens from an old film camera. They are a 28-105 / 3.5-4.5 and a 75-300 / 4-5.6

As you can see, I’m just getting started. I am looking for suggestions on which lens to purchase for the following. I have a five year old child that takes both dance and softball. Is there a good lens choice that would work for both a low light dance recital and an evening softball game? I’m not looking to refinance the house but I am open to any suggestions as to what I should start looking at.

Any help will be greatly appreciated……..

Probably the 85/1.8 (or 100/2) would be the best bet.

That 28-105 is quite decent I understand, but the 75-300 should be retired in favour of the 55-250 IS.

You may also want to check out the 200 f2.8 L... it's really not very expensive and obviously will be good for low light for either activity.

+1 on the 85 1.8 for the indoor activities, not sure it'll be long enough for softball.

The 100mm 2.0 is a nice light fast sharp lens that is reasonably priced. great for portraits and sports. The previously mentioned 200mm 2.8 is outstanding as well, if you decide you need a long telephoto.

Looks like the general consensus is to go with the Canon 70–200. I will have to look into ordering one.

Does anyone have any experience with the Tamron 18 – 270? I am looking at this one for just a general carry lens. It looks like a good catch all lens for candid and less formal shots.
