Just about to upgrade my 30D to the 50, and looking for advice on firmware version etc so I don't buy one that got overlooked in the stampede to buy the first ones to hit the shelves.

Anything else like tips on serial numbers etc to work out date of manufacture would help too.

Cheers & thanks.

I'm not sure what the concern is. Just buy one. You can download the current firmware from Canon's site and it takes every bit of 1 minute to update the 50D to the current firmware. It's a very easy process.

Firmware is easy to update yourself, don't worry about it.

There is no worry. If the camera you have does not have the current firmware, you can download it directly from the official Canon site. It just takes a few minutes to download and a few minutes to upload. Just make sure the camera battery is fully charged before you initiate an update.

Just buy one.

They were in pretty short supply just before Christmas so any early stock will be long gone.

Buy now - update firmware later.

I updated my 50D earlier this week - took no more than a few minutes...all ok.

Mind you - I was happy with it's original firmware. I haven't noticed any difference.
