I made the move from a 40D last month to a 1DmkII. Best thing I could have done. I've been shooting sports and was a little disappointed in the 40D. A learning curve on the controls and what the body can do, but well worth it. If your coming from an XSi you will be amazed at the weight difference, better balance with a big lens though.

There have been a few firmware tweaks between the IIn and the II...the biggest change is the larger LCD, picture styles, and a more efficient buffer for a few more shots in a burst. Other than that, they are the same. Same sensor, same processor, same AF, same sealing, etc.

You don't see many topics on the differences because there aren't many, and none of them are integral to great images. It's like the 20D vs the 30D.

Larger buffer, larger screen, picture styles, automatically creates new folders when file numbers reach 9999, and the ability to write RAW to CF and JPEG to SD and vice versa, and uh... I think that's pretty much the jist of it.

Oh, and about $500-600 used. That sums up the differences.

Results of a 4 second google search. That wasn't too difficult.

Honestly i see no reason for one over the other, get the one which is best in price, and least shutter count. These beasts normally see a lot of action.

I just bought a used 1D2. Buy it...you'll love it !
Look over on the dp review site for details. Here's the link for the "1D2n", and if you look down through the list of non current models, you can read the whole test of the 1D2

I was thinking of going this route. What would be considered a decent shutter count for this camera?

I'm not sure there is a really definitive answer to that. A good starting guideline would be that they are 'duty rated' at 200,000. Of course that does not mean it will fail at that point....nor does it mean it will last that long. Some fail early....some actually just keep on going. The body I just bought was an "ugly" one from KEH...thread here about it:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=693992

.....mine has 130K on it....but I got it cheap enough that if I have to have the shutter replaced, I won't feel to bad about it. As always, buying used is a bit of a pig in the poke.

I too went from 40D to 1D for sports and I wanted the IIn but then realized I could keep my Tokina 11-16 to go with my XSi if I got the cheaper Mark II instead. Boy am I glad. The Tokina 11-16 is a fabulous UWA on the 1D!

Comparing the 40D to the 1D II here's what I see.

- AF is much, much better.
- Viewfinder is nicer (sharper, bigger)
- Weight is significantly higher
- No more bolt-on grip that is never tight
- Using the LCD to review images is almost useless
- Flash exposure is off by about 1 stop by FEC corrects it just fine.
- IQ went up
- High ISO noise is about the same

About the LCD - The 1D II has such a small / poor display that it is pretty much useless for confirming focus or stop action. I can use it to review the histogram but only if I'm not outside in bright light (overcast or brighter). So, I've quit looking at the LCD and I just shoot.

Actually, the bulk of the user interface is not as nice as the 40D. You always have to hold one button while pressing another to make the camera do anything. This means changing ISO or WB, viewing images or histograms, etc. takes 2 hands. Hassle. But it also means you won't accidently change mode, ISO, WB etc.

IQ is higher with the 1D too. Colors are a bit richer, things are a bit smoother, all my lenses are a bit sharper.

Battery life is somewhere around 1000 frames - very nice!

My 1D has 70K clicks and I paid about $1100 for it. It has some minor exterior "battle scars" that I didn't even notice for the first month. I'd love to upgrade to the IIn but there are better things I could do with the $500 it would cost.

Hm, I'll just slot my question in here. So what if you're comparing the 50D (which is essentially a 40D with a better screen and more mp) versus the 1D mark IIn (which is a 1D2 with better screen and buffer)?

I've said it a few times, the Mark II is, in my opinion, the best bang for the buck camera out there. 1000 bucks usually for 1 series performance? You'd be crazy not to.
I do like the 40D's color, and the 40d dpes take great pictures but I love 1 series cameras and their reliability is second to none.
