An Edinburgh society put on the infrequently-performed musical The Kiss Of The Spider Woman, and invited me to shoot the dress rehearsal.
I knew something of te director's work. So when she told me to expect it to be dark, I really expected it to be dark, and used the 50mm f/1.8. In truth, I could probably have gotten away with the 24104mm f/4.0, but there were occasions when the extra aperture was useful.
I normally don't like black and white much - I love bright colours (heck, I'm a musicals lover!) - but I felt that this show worked well in B+W.

As for the show, I'm not convinced it was entirely my cup of tea, though I was too busy photographing it to really take in much of what was happening. I was aware that I was watching phenomenal acting between the two men.

1. The Spider Woman opens the show. Mist, gently-turning fan and a serious lady in black. What more could you ask for?
2. The prisoner (a political prisoner in a random south American country) is beaten up before being sent to his cell
3. He is forced to share a cell with an exceedingly camp cell-mate, whom he loathes from the start. The camp cellmate tells him how he dreams of his imaginary movie star - the Spider Woman. The straight bloke makes it clear he's not interested in conversation
4. Okay, I was too busy shooting to get the story line here. A pretty girl comes in and dances with the prisoners, who transform from thugs into elegant dancers. Maybe I should have watched the movie before shooting the show.
5. Back in the cell, the straight bloke dreams about his girlfriend while the queer fellow worries about his ill, ageing mother
6. Another pretty girl appears. She dances. Look, I was busy taking pictures, okay?
7. The gay prisoner is intimidated into spying on the straight one
8. A showgirl appears and dances with the prisoners. This pretty much ends Act One.
