Hey Everyone;

I have heard a couple stories about people sending in old 1Ds's and MKII Ds's for service like cleaning and repair and then Canon sends them back a brand new MKIII.

How many people here have had that happen?

Is Canon really that cool that they would do that or are those stories big fish stories?

Point being I am about to get a 1Ds MKI for trade and I am going to send it in for cleaning and a general check up.

Its nice to dream :P

Whenever I've read about it, they've always been a CPS member. Hell, if it were for anyone, I would have sent the 1D classic that I bought a few weeks ago in straight away! :p

So here's what you do. Find out the phone number that they use to call within Canon to a repair center. Then call until you get the youngest sounding person there and act all in a hurry and official and tell them that Mr. Kitaki from CPS told you to call and put a rush on a pre-authorized exchange for a 1Ds coming under the UPS number XXXXX and that he need's results. Oh, and tell him to include some free vouchers for other future service on the new body. If they act confused, tell then that word has been slow getting through because they instituted that time off for family in Japan HQ.

Shhhh...don't let this turn into a Rosco Gel samples situation.

Don't know about MkIIIs but I do know someone who sent their 5D Classic in several times and Canon eventually sent a 5DMkII...

I remember someone here sending in their 1Dino and got back a 1D mark III.

But those situations are the RARE EXCEPTION and FAR from the norm.

Otherwise, everybody would be doing it and canon wouldn't make any money.

A couple people in Canada sent in defective XS's and got XSi's, but those probably cost Canon about the same anyway and under warranty. I am guessing if they can't repair a 1D classic, they would just tell you it is time for them to SELL you a 1Dmk3

Sometimes this has happened with all kinds of models but it is always with people who have cameras that are broken beyond what they can repair.

If youre sending in a camera just to be cleaned, theyre not gonna look at it and say, "Oh gee, we should send this guy a 1DsMkIII"...
