Just upgraded to 50D from the 30D, and tried to open pics this evening, only to find photoshop elements can't open CR2 files ( Opened RAW from the 30 no probs).

Also tried using DPP (previously installed for the 30) but won't open them also.

I've been back into menu/settings and changed the pic type to RAW/JPEG mix, rather than sraw1 etc, but still the software not recognising the RAW pics.

Would it be a good idea to un install the original DPP (Circa 2 years ago version) and install the disk that came with the camera?

I'm a bit annoyed the PS elements 5.0 can't recognise the format.

Suggestions please?? (Yes, I did read the 50 manual).

Thanks

you have a couple options: upgrade to a newer version of elements, use DPP that came with the 50D, or convert them to DNG and use that in elements...

Thanks thaking.
Think the way to go then is to use the latest DPP, save as (whatever) then open in elements 5. - Can't justify upgrading yet to latest version of elements.

Much appreciated for the prompt reply.

That's a good way to go -- but you don't need to uninstall the older DPP. Just install the new software over it, and then make sure to check for updates.

As you go, you can get free trials of other options, like the newer Elements or Lightroom or whatever, but DPP is free and a lot of people prefer it.

If the elements you have was made before the 50d was released you will need to go to the adobe photoshop website and download something (I forget what it is called) so that PSE will recognise your camera, when I had elements 4, I had to do that for it to see the 30d.

I'm not positive, but I believe the 50D will only be supported by the newest version of Elements, as well as CS4 and Lightroom. At some point Adobe stops updating older versions of ACR/Lightroom. That's where either DPP or a DNG conversion is needed for the newer cameras if you can't upgrade the Adobe software.

i think tony's correct...the newest version of ACR (which is needed for the 50D) only works with certain programs, and elements 5 is not one of them...

5.3 is the latest version of ACR. I believe it only works with PSE 6 and 7.

My copy of PSE shipped with ACR version 4.6. A useful (free) upgrade.

Folks. My Photoshop Elements (it is the newest version, Ver. 7) will not open the RAW (.cr2) files out of my 50D either.

You need to download adobe Camara Raw 5.3 and replace the raw file with this one. Follow the instructions and it will work. I have Elements 7 and a 50D, and I had to do this. It works great. :D
