Here's the deal. I'm going to buy 2 new strobes an ABR800 and an AB800 with those I also intend to buy a Beauty dish. Separately I was looking for a boom arm, as I don't know anything about Boom arms so I looked at the Avenger D650 junior boom arm and was deciding on buying it, now after reading some threads looks like the PCB heavy duty stands won't work too well with the boom arms, even the D600 baby boom arm won't work because of the stud length.

Now what stand combination do you recommend with the D650 and the D600?

I was also thinking of buying the E700 drop down pin, will the AB800 attach to the long pin of the E700?

Do you recommend any other stand and boom arm combination?
My main uses would be with the 7" reflector, a 32" by 40" sofbox, and the 22" Beauty dish.

Why not use the boom arm sold by PCB http://www.white-lightning.com/lb11.html (external link), works great with my WL 1600.

Do you already own a lightstand or will you be buying that as well? If so, I have one word for you: AVENGER. You will never regret going with Avenger. I use the Avenger D600 mini-boom on either my A420 roller or A225 C-stand. Both combinations work fantastically well.

Excuse the mess seen in this photo but here's my setup for small product shots:

The boom arm conveniently folds down parallel to the stand risers. Notice there's also an Avenger drop down pin in the photo.

Yeah I've read threads and posts that say its flimsy, and I'm very picky when it comes to that, so that's why I'm looking elsewhere.

Well I'm not sure if to ditch the 13' PCB heavy duty stand, because I read that the avenger needs the longer stud like the C stand provides. Do you think it would work with the 13' PCB heavy duty stand?

What are the limits of your A600?

Tried looking for the A225 on B&H but it says its discontinued

What about the A650? Is it overkill?

The A225 has been renamed, not discontinued. It's now known as the A2030D. Avenger insists on doing this every so often. Here's the B&H entry:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Turtle_Base_Century.html (external link)

The A650 will definitely work with the D600 but only you can answer whether it's overkill or not. Obviously, it will handly your Alien Bees without breaking a sweat.

I would say if you're going to use a boom, having a stand with wheels will make your life alot easier and safer. The stand in the photo I provided is the Avenger A420. Very wide footprint (= stable) and wheeled. The Avenger A5017 (formerly the A660) will also work and is lighter and less expensive than the A420. However, it also has a smaller footprint which is not a good thing if you're flying lights on a boom.

I very much doubt that the Avenger D600 would mount on the PCB stand. The mounting arrangement of the mini-boom resembles a standard grip head. It does require a long stud of the type found on all Avenger stands. There are workarounds but I'm sure that's not what you'd want.

All I can say is that once you've used Avenger gear, you'll be spoiled for life.

Thank you for answering, I mispelled I didn't mean the A650 but the D650 Junior boom arm.

What's the D600 practical limit in your experience?

Practical limit? Beats me. I haven't stressed my D600 anywhere near its limit. The published spec says it will hold 66 lbs at minimum extension (46 inches) and 15.4 lbs at maximum extension (7 feet). I don't think I've ever hung 15 lbs from the boom. An Elinchrom 600RX weighs a little under 6 lbs and a softbox/octabox may weigh 4 lbs or so. A total of 10 lbs is well within the ultimate operating limit of the D600. As with any boom, make sure you have an appropriately sized counterweight.

Thank you for the comments. I'm thinking of buying the e700 the D600 and the A420. Hopefully I can buy it with the lights since I'm ditching the PCB 13' stand and the AB800 will be with out one temporarily hehe
One last question, can you take the rollers off the A420? In order to use it without them on location?

What Dave said. If you want to buy right, and only once, buy an Avenger! I haven't got the D600 mini-boom, but I do use the A700 and two C stands with extension arms and grip heads, and they are all in a different league from even my Manfrotto studio gear (which itself is head-and-shoulders above the no-name Chinese stuff).

That would be a very close equivalent. It has a black finish which I would have preferred as well.

Hi Guy's!

Im in the same boat, i want to add a boom arm to one of my A420.

Iv been looking at the following boom arms.

D600 (external link)

D650 (external link)

085BSL (external link)

I like the support/pivot mechanism of the 085bsl (never seen the D600/50 in real life)

What would you guys recommend ?

Im leaning towards the D650 since it seems like the sturdiest, but i havent been able to find it here in sweden yet.

Also given the A420 is only rated for 12kg, and the boom arms alone is a few kg (085bsl is 8,9kg) it doesnt give you much room for adding stuff on the boom arm ?

Thanx!

Regards
Paul L.
