Hey guys,

I just bought a film Rebel 2000 and I really like the size,

Now I have been saving up for a while for the gear in my sig and I have decided I would like to get the camera now and the other stuff as I go along,

I have always liked the prosumer bodies, im 14 and have small hands but for me they just feel right,

Now I have considered geting some of the gear and a rebel body instead of the 40D but im fairly sure I really want the 40D and I can wait for everything else,

I already have the 75-300mm which in my opinion is good for what I need it for, so I can survive without buying the other lenses for now,

So what do you think? Get a 450D/1000D and the 430EXII or go for the sexy 40D and keep saving :)

Also, I don't want to go for the 500D, as I said, I like the form of the prosumer bodys and for the cost of a 500D I can get the 50D so that's out of the question :p

For you guys who own both, can you please give me the benifiets of having a prosumer body and the benifiets of having a rebel body,

By the way, I don't mind the weight of the prosumer bodys, and to tell the truth, I dislike the weight of the rebels ;)

Thanks guys, I love POTN :D:D

~Josh

If you like the form of a prosumer body then a rebel should be out of the question. If you're tight with money you could also look at the 20d/30d they're both incredible and can be picked up for cheap now days. If you have the money for the 40d, then go for it.

Probably go for the 40D if you can afford it and you're happy with the lens set up that you have.

You're right in that there's a difference in "feel" between the rebel and prosumer bodies, and if you're currently not happy with the "feel" of the rebel, it probably won't get any better over time.

If you feel that you want to invest in photography for a longer period (and it sounds as if you do), then it's probably a good thing to go with the 40D and enjoy it.

Another (cheaper) option might be to go for a 30D and cut your digital teeth on that for a while. It's less expensive and the results won't significantly differ from the 40D. You'll then have more leeway (financially speaking) to explore your future options. Plus, the 30D is a generation old by now and you won't loose too much money in selling it off again if you need to.

Just another option for you.

The benefits of the xxxd's (Rebels):
Smaller
Lighter
Cheaper

The benefit of the XXd's
Better ergonomics
Better build quality
Better AF
Better constant shooting speed

It's really that simple. I can't live without the rear wheel or the rear focus button (I understand the later rebels may do a rear focus button but my 300d doesn't). The 40d is great, the 20d is almost as good. But if I was starting from scratch I might have been able to live with a 450d.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the late reply :)

I think I will go with the 40D sounds like the best option,

Two questions, is the viewfinder a penta mirror or pentaprism?

And I understand that the sensor is a 1.6x crop, does that mean I will see a difference in the viewfinder compaired to my film rebel?

I.e will objects in the viewfinder appear 1.6x larger compaired to the film viewfinder?

Cheers guys,

~ Josh ;)

The "crop factor" is largely a red herring. Yes, you'll notice a difference if you compare same-for-same, but in every day use, you'll get used to just dealing with whatever you see through the viewfinder and adjust your focal length to suit.

I went from a 30D (1.6 crop), to a 5D (full frame), to a 1D Mk II (1.3 crop) and the changes never bothered me at all.

The thing you'll notice the most when going from full frame (film) to 1.6x is wider isn't as wide. When you get to the longer focal lengths it's not as noticeable. For example, and similar to what Pete said, using a 24 prime on my 400D nearly presents a 'normal' field of view, similar to a 50 on FF. But on my 1D, which is 1.3x, it's less of a normal lens and more of a wide-ish angle.

If money is the problem go with 20 or 30D. You can always upgrade.

The xxD series uses a pentaprism while the Rebel series uses a pentamirror.

Going from film to crop you will notice a significant difference in viewfinder size/brightness (there is no magnification to make up for the 1.6 crop). However, If you primarily use AF it's pretty easy to adjust to.

Good call Joe.. 30Ds are very well priced now on the 2nd hand market.. 20Ds and 30Ds have had little problems..

The ergonomics are the same as the 40D...

You know, thats always been something i wondered...

I was just thinking of how whenever i go out shooting, whatever i have on me i tend to make work..sometimes its impossible..othertimes..well i just contort my body to make it work...
