Speaking from Canadian retailers only, I was 50/50 on looking at either the new 5DII , or a NOS 5d classic, but everything is going up in price here...5dII now at 3299 (up at least $200)

Just Canada getting dinged like this?

Also, is there any trustworthy online vendor with a good price on a 5d classic...I'm only partially considering this purchase, so I'm not going to be hitting the buy/sell.

Looked in the local camera shop this morning the displayed price of a Sigma 150-500 had gone up by 10%. Glad I bought mine a few months back.

It seems that demand is outstripping supply (could be a synthetic shortage or not) so if I were a manufacturer or retailer I would raise prices as well. Not just on the 5d's but lenses seem to be in short supply as well.

I would also guess US prices may be getting ready for more price increases as the US dollar looks to be losing a fair bit of value. Maybe the increases that have occurred anticipated this slide in value maybe it didn't. Which usually (possibly always) means Canadian prices go up as well.

I bet that manufacturers are facing much the same uncertainty with their costs.

Second hand markets will follow the trend and since with the internet someone in a village of 50 people still has a world wide market to advertise to it is likely to be remain very good to sellers especially in times of short supply of new product. That is something very recent and so we are likely to see more changes still. It should be interesting to see what happens.

The manufacturers/retailers here in the UK say it is the relative strength of the Yen.

They pay Canon/Nikon etc. in Yen and they need more £/$ etc. to do it so up go prices.

Check B&H and Adorama for prices, they're extremely trustworthy.

Canadian prices are usually always higher than our American neighbors. We just do not have the population that can spend as much on things as the Americans down south. We end up paying a good chunk of change more.

True, our prices are usually higher then in the States but most of that is due to the difference in our dollars which currently is only around 11% lower in value then the American. Lens prices are far more then 11% more expensive here. Case in point; the EF14 f/2.8 L (a lens I'd dearly love to buy if the price was a bit more reasonable),at B&H is $2020 USD. At Aden Camera, it's $2630 and even more at Vistek or Henry's. It's even worse on accessories like batteries and grips...meanwhile, body price are much closer to the exchange rates, oddly enough. Also, Canon Canada is supposedly owned by Canon USA which makes this all the more frustrating.

Cheers!

Not sure if that is a good analogy. B&H is a giant seller and usually kills all the local shops on pricing, American OR Canadian. My local shop wants about $2300 for that lens. That sounds almost right with your 11% price differences.

I was attempting to offer the difference based on competitive retailers on either side of the border. Would you spend the extra 280 at your local retailer if you didn't have to?

Cheers!

It's true I was doing my research the other day and everything does get considerably more expensive up here.

Its almost as if it might be cheaper to fly down to NYC for the day and pick it up at B&H

70-200 2.8 IS
Henry's - 2099.99 + 13% tax (henry's) = 2371.87
B&H - 1600 (not sure how much tax is) but with exchange = 1797

round trip from Toronto is around $300.......but I wouldn't go that far, although it would be a fun day.

I suppose there could be SOME correlation to dollar strength, but I'm the primary shopper of the house, and just I see a lot more than just photo gear going up in price. Not sure it's supply demand thing either. Most of the Canon prices are up across the board, and I doubt that those 85 1.2 fly off the shelves...the 85 1.8 looks to be $40 more.

Thing is, two summers ago the CDN dollar and US dollar were par - even better in Canada-and prices didn't change.

That 2699 5D @ B&H= 3,022.61 after today's conversion.

Add the sales tax, and we're at $3414

Straight sale from Vistek is $3727 taxes in.

That's just $300 profit per body.

I guess buying US has come full circle again and is still cheaper!!

I guess I find it annoying as the economy desperatley needs spenders, and this ain't helpin"!!!!

it's not just Canada. I bought a sigma 20mm for $400 in January this year and they're now priced at $569. That's at B&H so it's not someone monkeying with the prices. They say it's the $/yen issue, but I'm also thinking it's almost reverse supply and demand. Demand is way down, so the manufactures are making less and charging more for what they do make. So the supply side is sorta true, but only because they're intentionally limiting the supply so they can control the demand. Also, if you watch for in stock items, there have been a lot of VERY POPULAR lenses that have been out of stock for a while on B&H as well (hinting at a slower production schedule).

sign of the times I guess?

I'm guessing Japanese companies aren't too interested in stimulating other economies but rather, increasing their own bottom lines.

And, from what I can tell, people are still buying. They may be grumbling a bit, but they are still buying.

It's called a free(not to you and me ;)) market.

Question is...

What would happen to prices if folks stopped buying?

:)
