OK, this is more for my sister than me as I've long since gone FF, but what is the widest FL you can use the cropped body wides at on a 1 series? They're leaning towards the tokina 11-16 (and there's the obvious sigma 10-20, tamron 10-24 and canon [gutted] 10-22), but at what FL does the vignetting stop?

I'm trying to convince them the sigma 12-24mm is the way to go, as that's what I had when I shot a 1 series... But for whatever reason they're thinking they'd prefer the wider options and deal with the vignetting later... But at what FL does it stop? Knowing that should help convince them a working 12mm option is much better/easier....

I doubt any of the other offerings would stop vignetting at 12mm so the Sigma is likely the widest non-fisheye available.

Do they really need to be wider than 16mm? I just bought a 16-35 F2.8L for my 1DmkIII and its awesome!! plenty wide.

Have you considered a 15mm FE lens? It is not very fishy on 1.3x and wide.

Sigma 12-24 DG EX HSM never vignettes on FF, 1.3x, or 1.6x crop. But it does so at a cost of speed. AF is quick thanks to HSM but f/4.5-5.6 isn't fast enough in bad light, and flash is very difficult to deal with with this lens... you REALLY need to know how to be creative with bounce if you're stuck using on-camera flash (as I was forced to deal with a few weeks ago shooting in a wine cellar).

I had the 17-40 and now I have the 16-35 mk I on 1.3x. Both suck under 20mm because of barrel distortion... but I guess it depends on what you do. I do alot of cityscape and I'm telling you... I gotta make sure I'm above 20mm every time (unless I crop and only use the central 70% of the image)... but that should be absent on wide landscapes.

yes, they do need/want wider. So both the 16-35 and 17-40 are out.

yeah, that's the one lens I know since I've owned one... I just need to know when the other options stop vignetting.... The siggy's not for everyone, but if you're serious about your wides it's kinda the only option. I just need the numbers to back that up for them....

My Tokina 11-16 works at 12mm if I take the lens hood off. With the hood, I'm good at 13mm.

Very, very nice!

You do know you can fix barrel distortion VERY easily in post, right? Download PTLens...free trial, and then it's a cheap register fee (under $30), and then it's a one click fix....it automatically detects the lens, camera and focal length from the EXIF and applies the correction automatically, calibrated to that lens. Easy as pie.

There must be an IQ hit with all that morphing ?

I've read about many 1.3x owners being VERY happy with the Tokina 12-24mm f/4. I'd love to get one for mine but it's around to AU$1000 and it's only f/4, which isn't ideal for me. But if your sister is fine with f/4, there's an option there.

I've just read that it's designed for 1.6x but I'm sure it's that lens that I've read about peforming really well on a 1.3x... Might have to have a look around.

No...it's a pretty small correction. Yeah, the 17-40L has barrel distortion, but it's not like it's a fisheye, people!

quick example:
