I have Lightroom 1.4.1 and I would like to jump to Lightroom 2. But I don't want to make the jump if Lightroom 3 is just around the corner.

Any clues out there?

Lightroom 2 was a very worthwhile upgrade to 1.4
If you haven't yet tried the 30 day trial of Version 2, I'd recommend that you do.
At the time Lightroom 3 is released....to me, it'll be well worth another 99 dollars.

Lightroom 2.3 is a well developed program. It's definitely worth the upgrade.

I don't question if the upgrade is worth it or not. I know it is and want to upgrade. I just don't want to pay $99 for the upgrade and then find out that LR3 is right around the corner and I find myself paying another $99.

The first commercial version of Lightroom shipped in February 2007 and Lightroom 2 shipped in July 2008. Do the math.

Those who know can't say so anything you hear will be mostly speculation.

Seeing how Lightroom 1 went as far as 1.4 before Lightroom 2 was even announced for beta release, and it took almost 4 months before Lightroom 2 was realised, I would say your safe for a few months anyways.

If Adobe does put out a new Lightroom every 16 months (time between lightroom 1 and 2) then they wouldn't release lightroom 3 until the last of 2009 or early 2010.

But like Fedka already said, those in the know can't/won't say ( pay is too good :) )

Though since I just bought a Lightroom 2 book, adobe will announce the Lightroom 3 beta next week ;)

Also bear in mind that the early Beta and RC versions are typically being debugged. In fact, Lightroom one was pretty rough until about 1.2. Those minor releases can do a lot. They are typically about 3 months apart, so you may not want to jump on LR3 until 3-6 months after 3.0.

+1...

LR 1 was just about 'ok' by version 1.3 - They then released v2, this is just about 'ok' now at version 2.3, so I'd not bother with version 3 till about 3.3 if I were you :-)

At which point you might as well wait for version 4 :).

At a bare minimum!

It's funny, but I hung out at the Lightroom Users forum for quite a while during the days when LR1 was released and being regularly upgraded. It was cool whenever they put out something that actually improved things, but we were always working on our "wish list", even though some things obviously would take some programming effort and wouldn't show up in version one. I mean, the idea of "describing" local adjustment brushes was a glimmer in our eyes, as were gradients -- we knew that the cloning stamp/healing brush showed that they were possible, though, and we thought "my wouldn't that be nice?". When LR2 came out with those thing it was a Raw developers dream come true!

"Our rock stars are not like your rock stars" applies here!

Yeah, there's a lot of improvement for LR, except I'm sure Adobe won't do too much to keep LR and PS separate.
