I guess it's not a rumor any more and now NEWS!!

Canon Enable Manual Exposure in Video on EOS 5D Mark II

LONDON, UK, 27th May 2009: Canon announced today it will release a firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark II allowing users to manually control exposure when shooting video. The new firmware will be available for download from 2 June 2009 on Canon Europe’s support web site.
Following the launch of the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008, Canon’s Research and Development team has listened closely to customer feedback to develop additions to the camera’s movie recording functionality.

Allowing EOS 5D Mark II owners to achieve even more stunning video results with the camera, the firmware update will include the following manual controls when shooting video:

* Full aperture selection
* ISO speed: Auto, 100 – 6400 and H1
* Shutter speed: 1/30th – 1/4000th second

The EOS 5D Mark II integrates full HD movie capability into a high-end 21.1 Megapixel camera; opening a multitude of new possibilities for photojournalists and news photographers. Since its launch the camera has proved its appeal to professionals working in diverse fields, from studio and wedding to nature and travel. Now, following customer feedback, Canon has improved functionality for professional video users, further unleashing the potential of the EOS 5D Mark II for cinematographers and photographers alike.

Yup, I like many others got an email from Canon stating the same. It was only a matter of time. I think Canon had this planned all along but wanted to get the 5DmkII onto market sooner than expected.

Yeah, I just got my email from Canon, too. Hot diggity damn!

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

No 24p, Canon can be so humorous sometimes. :)

I do hope Canon's focus on video improvements does not equate to decreased focus on still photos quality and functionality improvements.

I'm glad that this is a free downloadable firmware update. How much would you be willing to pay?

Which time zone?

Who is going to stay up all night to be the first one to download this?

guys. i'm gonna ask an off topic question. what's all the fuzz about 5D Mark II not having 60 fps? What's with 24fps, 30fps and 60fps? I thought all films shown in theaters are 24fps and so what's the deal with this 30fps and 60fps? Thanks.

Well, actually most people were hoping for this firmware update to include a 24fps option so we could pick 24 or 30 fps.

At least it does 30fps - I mean you can always take it down to 24 in software... so no biggie there. The dealbreaker was definitely manual aperture, iso and shutter.. which is what we got - yeeah, Canon!

Major sucky thing though, I just sent my 5Dm2 back to B&H TODAY... to be exchanged for a new one. Mine had been seizing up several times, in the 3 weeks I had it. I figured it would be better to exchange for a new one now, rather than have to send it to Canon later.

Now, I'm wondering if I'm going to have to wait forever to a new one, as I bet sales are going to spike again causing even more of a shortage.

How is your 5Dmkii seizing up? If it stops showing the preview screen, or it suddenly makes your flash fire in a rapid manner (modelling "light"). It is probably you pressing the DOF preview button (I made that mistake too without knowing).

Posted here too:

But this one is more popular.

I might actually use it for proper video stuff now. Time to get a nice mic to stick on top. :)

Yeah, not that... it literally would stop working. No AF lights or I'd change aperture or shutter, to say 5.6 - then shoot.. and the photo would be shot at whatever the previous aperture was, say f22. It would then stick at f22 no matter what I do until I either remove the lens or turn the camera on and off. Sometimes, even that wouldn't work - turned the power off and the camera stayed on! Had to remove the battery to get it to restart. I thought it was just me at first, but last weekend when using the camera for several hours, these types of things happened at least a couple times. This happens with any CF card, and any of my lenses on it.

Back it goes..(err went)!
