you guys are kidding right? i hope you're not underexposing on purpose, because then you'd be better off doubling the ISO and properly exposing. unless if you guys mean that when you **** up, you're not able to save your image as much as you'd like? either way, sounds like poor shooting to me.

Here's a link of just that. If you look at the background there's banding. This is even with good exposure. This doesn't happen with my 1Ds MK III.

Never had an issue with banding on mine unless I severely underexpose but that happens with my other cams as well.

Well, I'm not here to make a debate about it. This is what kept me from purchasing one. I thought that the new firmware would remedy that but, that doesn't mean the camera sucks. Just sayin'. :)

I have an album of test images shot with my 5D2 at 100 ISO, starting with a "normal" exposure and then underexposed and pushed by 1 stop, 2 stops, 3 stops and 4 stops. There are resized full images and 100% crops. Feel free to take a look....

The IQ takes a big turn for the worse at 4 stops under, but unless pixel peeping I don't think the results at -3 are offensive. Sharpening and NR are at the same default settings throughout.

EDIT : I added one more slide - a 100% crop of the shot at -4 stops, pushed 4 stops and then run through Neat Image.

Here's a glimpse of the shot at -3 stops both before and after the +3 stop exposure adjustment to bring it back up to a "correct" exposure level, firstly without clipping warnings enabled and then with them enabled, just to show how underexposed the file really was....

Why? It is not a sunny day. It is a miserable, overcast day, shooting towards the position of the sun (were it visible and not covered by cloud). Therefore it is entirely reasonable that by shooting a "Sunny 16" exposure the resulting image is underexposed by 3 stops. It breaks no physics laws at all.

The correct exposure should have been 3 stops brighter....

EDIT : Look at the rain soaked car (this is the shot with the "correct" exposure of 1/13, f/16, 100 ISO). It was a drizzly day.

Finally! For those wanting to know what all is included, as copied from Canon's website:

Firmware Version 2.0.3 incorporates five enhancements to the movie function and a fix to the manual sensor cleaning function of the EOS 5D Mark II camera.
1. Adds or changes the following movie frame rates
NTSC: 1920x1080:30 fps (changed - actual 29.97fps)
1920x1080:24 fps (added - actual 23.976 fps)
640x480:30 fps (changed - actual 29.97fps)
PAL: 1920x1080:25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)
1920x1080:24 fps (added - actual 23.976 fps)
640x480:25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)

2. Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).

3. Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.

4. Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.

5. Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.

6. Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

so, which frame rate is used for most general purposes? If a video will only be viewed on a computer/online, should one record at 29.97fps? I don't plan on doing any broadcast/television work

My understanding is that most movies are filmed in 24p, but most online media is in 30p.
