Yeah, not that... it literally would stop working. No AF lights or I'd change aperture or shutter, to say 5.6 - then shoot.. and the photo would be shot at whatever the previous aperture was, say f22. It would then stick at f22 no matter what I do until I either remove the lens or turn the camera on and off. Sometimes, even that wouldn't work - turned the power off and the camera stayed on! Had to remove the battery to get it to restart. I thought it was just me at first, but last weekend when using the camera for several hours, these types of things happened at least a couple times. This happens with any CF card, and any of my lenses on it.

Back it goes..(err went)!

Sounds like a lemon for sure. Good to send that sucker back.

;)

BTW - Can anybody confirm that shutter closures in the 5D2 video mode are electronic rather than mechanical ? [reason being - that it doesn't sound logical that shutter closures (say at a rate of 30FPS) are mechanical due to shutter life longevity]

wow one of my friends is a total nikon fanboy, here is what he remarked to my link on Facebook:

"wow..... they didnt figure this out before the release? guess nikon engineers are smarter afterall~ =p"

he got pwned:

"umm
1) canon: 1080p, nikon: 720p
2) canon: 30fps, nikon: 24fps
3) canon: 35mm sensor recording video: nikon: less than half the size
4) canon: manual video control, nikon: none

come back when nikon catches up"

and

"5) Nikon D90: no autofocus"

lol

just curious, does the d5000 have AF?

24fps is more "film like" which is obviously better.

First of all....I loooooooooove the announcement of the new firmware!
Would it be possible to add 24p in a firmware update actually?
I just read this over at dpreview:

"As I stated a number of months ago changing the frame rate of a video camera is not a simple thing. It might not be possible in the 5D Mark II because 30P is baked into the cameras electronics and is not controlled with firmware.
Parameters such as the graphics chip for the monitor, the HDMI output and even the WIFI graphics and USB interfaces play roles in what you can do with existing hardware.
I wish I were wrong on 24P because some of the shots I have done for a TV series had to be converted to 24P from 30 which can have some issues.
I applaud every thing else with the new firmware and look forward in utilizing it in future projects."

Better ? Why ? Naively, one can think that having 30FPS is way better.
Maybe you meant that 24FPS is a de-facto standard.

And, BTW, 29.97FPS is also considered standard.

I have to say I'm pretty surprised. Adding features after the fact in firmware is very unlink Canon. Definitely a step in the right direction for them.

Does the 5D2 autofocus during video?

That's a great feature if it does :)

Barely, it's *very* slow to focus if you're recording. Better off sticking with manual focusing.

It's obvious it's not mechanical. Try it out. If you don't hear a constant drrrrrrrrrrrrrrr its not mechanical. And the shutter would have a mean lifetime of 83 minutes. Hardly feasible ;)

No 24p, Canon can be so humorous sometimes.

I do hope Canon's focus on video improvements does not equate to decreased focus on still photos quality and functionality improvements.

hehe
