Very cool indeed..
Still can;t justify this bit of kit cost wise, but I look forward to the next mid level release with Video..

Nice. I just picked one up and was a little surprised when this wasn't built in. Good to hear it's been corrected.

First of all....I loooooooooove the announcement of the new firmware!
Would it be possible to add 24p in a firmware update actually?
I just read this over at dpreview:

"As I stated a number of months ago changing the frame rate of a video camera is not a simple thing. It might not be possible in the 5D Mark II because 30P is baked into the cameras electronics and is not controlled with firmware.
Parameters such as the graphics chip for the monitor, the HDMI output and even the WIFI graphics and USB interfaces play roles in what you can do with existing hardware.
I wish I were wrong on 24P because some of the shots I have done for a TV series had to be converted to 24P from 30 which can have some issues.
I applaud every thing else with the new firmware and look forward in utilizing it in future projects."

Although I have shot professional video in the past, the more I think about it, the less important I feel 24P is on the camera level...

If you start with 30P (aka 29.97fps), you can always downconvert when editing if needed. BUT what most of us are not considering is what is happening to the HDTV market....

The big buzzword with last years models were HDTVs with 120hz technology (this year its the "new 240hz"). These models tout higher refresh rates to improve "HDTV BLUR" and make films appear more fluid in terms of motion.

FROM WIKIPIDIA....

HDTV blur is a common term used to describe a number of different artifacts on modern consumer high-definition television sets.
The following factors are generally the primary or secondary causes of HDTV (external link) blur; in some cases more than one of these factors may be in play at the studio or receiver end of the transmission chain.

  • Pixel response time (external link) on LCD displays (blur in the color response of the active pixel)
  • Slower camera shutter speeds (external link) common in Hollywood production films (blur in the HDV (external link) content of the film)
  • Blur from eye tracking fast moving objects on sample-and-hold (external link) LCD, plasma, or microdisplay.[1] (external link)
  • Resolution resampling (external link) (blur due to resizing image to fit the native resolution of the HDTV)
  • Blur due to 3:2 pulldown (external link) and/or motion-speed irregularities in framerate conversions from film to video
  • Computer generated motion blur (external link) introduced by video games (external link)[2] (external link)
Since the consumer electronic industry seems intent on pushing technology that reduces the 24P look, I dont feel compelled to look at 24P recording capability as a nessesity or use it as often as I once used to

this is pretty great news. I don't have to press the aperture preview button and pop the lens slightly out to lock my aperture selection any more. I even bought some neutral density filters, but that's ok, I've already found their necessary place in shooting long exposures of "flowing water" pictures.

I guess I have to thank ALL who voiced themselves about this issue which led to this update. I didn't say a peep as I just put up with the problem and used the workarounds. I'm glad others are more vocal otherwise this would have probably never turned up.

Now I wonder if those T1i owners will get the same fair treatment.

There aren't any L fisheye's, so I guess the Canon 15/2.8 would be your best bet. ;)

If you want to go cheap and can do MF, there is always the Zenitar 16 f/2.8:

Fantastic news! If not else for the fact that Canon comes across as "nice guys" for a change.

I think this is awesome. I could care less about 24p with the motion artifact that it creates, same as I could care less for "film like noise" in my digital images. I would honestly love to shoot in 60fps, and be able to slow it down.
Only other nice thing to have via firmware is better autoiso. If in AV, I could set both the aperture and shutter speed, dial in my desired EC, and have camera choose my iso, I would be ecstatic.

I got so frustrated with the auto controls that I haven't used the video features of the camera for over a month.

I must have blocked this out of my mind because of the nightmare it caused when I shot something only to find my sound was out of sync later on.

But this just sorta adds to my argument that no matter what formats we can record video in, we always need to ensure the most compatibility for playback depending on the format/media used. 24P may be fine and dandy for some, but if TVs are being released to reduce "HDTV blur" the intended look becomes lost.
