Can anyone tell me with certainty that it is worth sending my 1D mk III in for this recall fix. I live in Tanzania in East Africa and have bought my camera last year from B&H. My firmware is kept up to date. To send my camera back to the states for this fix is a major headache and I will most likely be without a camera for a few months.I can handle it if I know it is worth it(will have to dust the old film cam of), can anyone give me advice please.

i use center point for most of my shots and the latest fix is for the outer points so to me iv seen no diffrence.
At first i thought the af in AIservo seemd more stable but haveing used the mk3 more its not.
from what iv read you should still be on 1.2.3 as 1.2.5 is for when the fix is done .

I think Goshawk might mean the service fix

Canon has released a service notice for its EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III DSLRs. It addresses the issue of ring-shaped spots appearing in the images of some cameras - caused by lubricant from the mirror box getting onto the Low Pass Filter. Owners of affected cameras can contact Canon's customer support centre for for a free cleaning of the mirror box.

If you have these spots then yes of course - I don't.

Hmm I use my outer points a lot for portraits but cannot say that I have noticed a problem. I also do not have a problem with lubricants.
I was hoping the service fix was to sort the focus tracking out for good.

Does that means that I have to go back to 1.2.3 ??? until canon has done this service fix. I wish Canon would post a warning to that effect, that is a bit annoying.

I would imagine that there is no warning because 1.2.5 doesn't have anything to do with the service notice. If you're having problems with your outer AF points, send it in, if not, don't worry about it.

I would not send it in for the "oil spot" issue unless you have the problem.

...There is nothing worth sending this cams back to Canon, unless you do have an operational problem that stops you from getting pictures taken.

Make sure your firmware is up-to-date and you perform a true, good micro-AF calibration.

Hey thanks a lot for the replies, I cannot say that I have experienced any problems with my cam, I have had it for just over a year and so far it has performed faultless. So yeah I do not think my cam is going to the states then unless it does develop a problem.

good decision. mine doesn't have any problems either, never has. but for me it's much less of a hassle so i think i'll send mine in and get it cleaned, updated and looked over.

i'm sending my 1ds in for the oil issue so i figure i might as well service both cameras since i don't even have to pay postage.

Yes Ed I am sure I would have sent my cam in if I lived close to a service center even if it was just to get it checked out and cleaned. As I said the cam is working well and I am really happy with it but feeling a bit worried cause for Canon to do recalls must mean there is something wrong somewhere.
How do you like the 1Ds cause one of my friends has replaced his 1D III for a 1Ds III and he is not happy at all. He is talking of reverting back to the 1D III.

the 1ds has grown on me...it's the camera i reach for unless i know i need the attributes of the 1d mark III. i like it alot but i still need a crop camera too.

i'd say as an all-around camera the 1d mark III is the best....tho i would like a few more MP.

i like how my lenses work on the 1ds mark III better....untill i get to the long end :D.

one thing i really like about the 1d mark III is the files take less sharpening...and i general i have an easier time producing a sharper image....but the resolution of the 1ds mark III is capable of producing stunning images too....in the IQ department i have to give it to the 1ds by a hair.

how long has your buddy had his 1ds? it took me a little while but the 1ds has sure grown on me...i hope that makes sense :D.

I use to shoot with a 1Ds II for a few years before I got the 1D III and for the first few months the small files really bugged me. Every time I clicked "actual" pixels I thought something was wrong ha ha. Somehow that has disappeared and I am used to the smaller files now. I am trying to remember now but would say he has had the cam for about 4 months give or take a month. And amazingly he shoots mostly portraits(High School Seniors). But as you said I am sure he will grow into it. He just will keep on missing that 10FPS for his diving shots at the pool -ha ha
