This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 72hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before & After #190".

This is all about having fun so have at it!!!

This round will end Saturday May 30th 7:00 pm PST USA.

Spontaneous picture taken one afternoon just south of Santa Barbara, CA. While the image is sharp and the colors are nice, the picture doesn't do anything for me. ... Let's see what you guys can do to improve it !!!;)

GAH! It's amazing as is :p

well anyway... here is my take.

in cs2, some levels, I hit it 2 or 3 times with some curves, color balance, brightness/contrast, shadow/highlight, gamma/exposure, cloned out the head? at the bottom of the photo & I didnt like what was at the top of the stairs so I got rid of it, did some sharpening & burning, the moss that was brought out in highlighting I did some green tinting to it to add some more color to the photo, & a lighter green up the bottom of the posts just a tint, ... , added a border.

lots of minor adjustments, not sure if I remember all of them but here goes nothing!
cropped, added 2 adjustment layers (b/w and brightness/contrast), duplicated the image, duplicated it again and cut out everything but the pier then moved that layer above the 2 adjustment layers, added more height to the image and changed the background color, added a faint shadow and stroke, merged and duplicated the whole thing, blurred it, set to color dodge and added a layer mask so only the pier was the "affected area".

Hope you like :)

I'd say all it would take is a guy with a surfboard and a girl in a bikini:)!

Got nuthin' this time, so just mucking about (I've also got a heap of work in front of me). No reason to spoil a good cheesecake post with a lot of Photoshop details. Mostly I just increased the left side of the horizon.

Tony, you owe me a beer :p

Duplicated background
Edit - transform - scale to change direction of pier
Blend mode change to multiply
Add new layer fill with grey 50% and change blend mode to overlay
Paint in some detail on cross beams on the pier
New layer and paint in the lights to turn them on
Flatten and save

Added clouds with multiply layer and some skew for foreshortening image. added 3 separate gradient layers in various modes. solar flare for effect (maybe a little too much for some tastes) overlaying layers and several masks/inverted masks applied. and i stretched the image a bit which kinda messed up the image quality but I liked the composition better.

BTW... Did you go camping in Gaviota?
I think I have that pier on my desktop link (external link)

OK, I was going to break it down, but I forgot how hard that is !!! I haven't had to judge one of these since B&A # 149, and that was a LONG, LONG time ago!! I found the edits this round to be quite interesting. They certainly covered a broad range, and several were really, really good.

But I'm going to cut right to the chase -

m33p33 - I really liked what you did with the image. The colors are well balanced, the contrast is just about perfect, and I like the slight change in perspective. I would have skipped on the flare, but I also didn't feel that it detracted from the image either. I like the way you brought out the detail of the underside of the pier. Of course, I see you've been to Gaviota, so you had a HUGE advantage over all of the others, since you know what this site looks like. Nice job !!!

BTW, I checked out your link and I have some similar pics, taken at different times of the day, so the lighting is different. ... It's a really neat place to visit !!

OK, you're up !!

Congrats M33P33 - it's a handsome edit indeed!

Good round everyone, and great entries (except for mine )
