A good deal? I hope so! :-D

Hey All,

Love this forum, tons of information for a new photographer to soak his eyes in to. My birthday is coming up and I'm looking to get a 50D. Always loved photography, and now that Im out the the Navy, I have time to do it.

I found this deal on ebay (listing here), by pyxis_camera. When I went to order the camera, the guy on the phone told me they could upgrade the flash card to an 8GB 133x high speed compact flash card for $75.00. When I went to look up how much a normal 8GB 133x campact card I could find them for 40-50 dollars. I'm not saying their trying to rip me off, but it seemed a little odd.

Anyways, what do you guys think of the deal? I've read most of you say that a lot of package deals come with a lot of crap stuff along with it, but I've added up the price of their products and it's way over their asking price (1147.60). My biggest worry is getting a cheaper lens then they have up. Is it possible to send a cheaper version of the 18-55 lens? As in quality..

I'm also considering getting a 28-135 lens also for my birthday, looks like a good lens for a beginner. This a good lens for someone who's starting out?

Considering that Amazon sells the 50D body for about $1150 or so I would say that's a good deal. I've also heard good things about Pyxis camera (not sure if they are authorized dealer though?) from a few people on here but their reseller ratings are pretty low...Then again J&R doesn't have stellar ratings on there but they are a legit company and I have purchased many things from them.

I looked at their rating. As my grandmother used to tell me "For every one customer that loves you, some how, 5 will hate you". She ran an A&W for 25 years back in the 50's. It's always hard to rate reviewers based on comments.

Not too concerned about them being a bad company, more if the deal is good.

Reseller ratings is considered a very good indicator. If you choose to ignore the experience of others, there's not much we can do to help you. I would, however, strongly suggest you give due consideration to the ratings offered.

with so low reseller rating I would NOT consider them even for buying nifty fifty. I would suggest you to consider Cameta Camera. They sell refurb products on ebay and seems to have reasonably good feedback I have seen here, fred miranda and on nikon forums.

My apologies Mark, I didn't mean to come off by saying that I'm not listening to the experience of others. Just saying its hard to rate it at times. I'm not going to just ignore what people say, I'm just going to take it with a grain of salt (since most the internet can be full of angry people) and if I happen to get burned, then it's bad on me. Thanks though for the advice all the same.

my friend just got a huge 50d package for like $1200 from newegg.com, worth checking out.

I don't know... I am so close on getting a new camera, been looking at the 40D, 50D and even the D300 and in most cases on the 50D/D300 I am only $200/300 off and I keep getting hit with the "good deals". For some reason it really concerns me when I see the "package deals" on eBay. The packages are a great "pull you in" for the seller, but IMO not for the buyer, in others words... How about this "Drop that crap and give me the body and lens for $200 less... I have tried a few times of asking to drop the package (in nice words) and just get the camera and lens and every time I never received a message back.

To me... It seems the seller is just a bit shady, trying to pull in the not so smart customer to thinking "what a deal", but really it isn't (not meaning to insult anyone with the "not so smart customer" comment), after all, how smart am I for still looking at this type of ad.

So after everything, I skip right over any type of listing that looks like the one linked here in the OPs 1st post.

Um, long story I guess that wasn't needed... So, IMO move along and try to find a better deal from a well known dealer... Nothing wrong with going Canon referb, saves about 10/15%, I don't think I have seen one bad word from people going that route, I did with my 30D and was happy.

I bought a Canon 24-105 L from them on May 10th. I just got the UPS confirmation yesterday that it is being shipped and will be here tomorrow.

I bought it for $899 but got $75 instantly taken off with live.com

A 24-105 L for $824, I suppose a little waiting is worth it.

They did always respond to my e-mail or phone calls asking when it will be shipped. They did tell me once that the lens is out of stock and will be shipped within 4 to 5 weeks. They offered a full refund, but I said I would wait. I called them a week later to check the status and they said the shipment came in early and would ship the next day.

I'll let ya all know if I receive it tomorrow or not! Im sure I will, UPS is tracking it for me.

I also thought it was worth the risk because you are protected if you use PayPal.

There's a lot of crap that comes with the body
the 18-55 IS lens is decent
the other "lenses" and filters, I would throw out as soon as I received them
The memory card... dunno that I would want to trust my pictures to some unknown card... use it until you can get something reliable (plenty of good known brands out there, and memory is cheap these days, not worth relaying on the unknowns)
The tripod would be decent to hold a flash, but if you actually use it for your camera, it won't be long before you'll want something better
I do wonder if the body is grey market or not though...

Many of their negs on Ebay have something to do with warranty, don't know if it is customer error or not though. If you do go ahead with the deal I would definitely check out the warranty more....give them a call they seem to respond back to most messages.

Just remember... Good old eBay has removed the Neg feed back option, so now (it is best) to look at the pos feed back to see if anyone has written anything neg in their statement.

Why eBay removed the neg is just DUMB, that dose nothing for the buyer, the buyer has no way on letting others now if things fell apart on the deal, well unless they give them POS then write about the problems that should have been NEG feedback. Just Stupid on eBays part.
