I was also looking for a 35L and/or a 70-200.

But I appreciate your honest comments.
Overal I'm very happy with my body, but the higher ISO and FF features are coming more important to me. Also the video function is something I would use sometimes.

But maybe you are right, look for a 5D second hand and invest some more into the glas.

What ISO rates are no problem for the old 5D?

Yeah but, 14mm on a FF body will be much wider than 24mm.

 Very much so.

Just get the 5DII. If it's keeping you awake at night, it'll be worth the peace of mind alone. :)

Depends what you want. Do you want landscapes on the FF format? Do you want 21MB pictures that you can crop and still print to large sizes? Do you want the advantage of video from a DSLR? If the answers are yes, I think the 5D2 is the way to go.

It's something of all of that.

I have my 40D one year now, and I love it and it always served me well, but sometimes I get a feeling I could do a better job with and more things with a newer body...

Jelle, dont settle, dont compromise, if the 5d2 is what you want, just get it

i was in the same situation a few weeks ago when i pulled the trigger on my 5d2, i came from a rebel XS, i only had it for 6 months, but in those 6 months i pretty much figured what type of photography i did most and the video came in handy more than i thought it would

the ISO is not even close from the 5d1 to the 5d2

like i said if the means are there....be like Nike and "just do it"

Sure it is.

The 5D MKII is better, and that is impressive considering it's packing twice as many pixels, but the original 5D was no slouch at high ISO, certainly a little better than the 40D.

You won't want to bother with the Tokina for only 2mm of zoom. Afterall, the 14mm translates to (14*1.6) 22.4mm which you practically have with the 24-105. 24mm is wide on a FF body when compared to a crop body. Totally different.

???

this is the toke on a 5dm2 @ 15mm:

The difference between shooting 14 or 16mm on FF and 24mm is enormous. 'only' 2mm of zoom is irrelevant, even using it as just a 16mm is a big gap from the 24mm end of the 24-105.

For my old film cameras I have both 17mm and 24mm primes, the difference is night and day.

You can't multiply one lens by 1.6, then say they are almost the same (22.4mm v 24mm). You have to multiply neither or both, you are either comparing 14mm to 24mm or 22.4mm to 38.4mm which is similarly wide a gap, but the multiplication is meaningless on the full frame it is simply the equivalent FoV for his cropper. With a FF, the lenses will be 14-16mm and 24-105, a big difference.

I'd have to say it depends on your prints. If you need to print large with great deal of accurate detail, then the big sensor will have a strong use for you. Sure the 5D2 has incentives like LCD and the well controlled high iso, but you're paying a lot for them, and you can still manage incredible shots without them. Today, or tomorrow, I'll be buying a 5D classic. Don't mind the 3 year old factor one bit. The pics will all come out the same. Rarely do I use full resolution. I will rely on the 21mp sensor only once in a blue moon for crop work or high paying 24x36 portraits for clients.

It's now I get some good money for my 40D. I bought it for €939 and I had a rebate of €150 so that makes €789. Now I have an offer of €550. So I payed €239 a year on my camera.
Plus the grip and extra batterie and I have €700 from my old gear.
I can get a 5D2 body for €2100 in the UK.
So now it's financially better for me to make an upgrade.
And I have the best camera in the world that someone with not that much of money could have :-).

while I know you just bought the camera, my advice would be this (because I am in the same boat) - only upgrade the body if you A. have the glass or B. will be getting the glass WITH the camera. a 24-105 and a 50/1.4 really needs a 70-200 and you have the bare necessities for FF, and once you see how the FF body works for you, upgrade with zooms/primes from there. good luck!

I already have good lenses and have moved from 20D -> 5D -> 5DII in a short span of 6 months.

I think it is a paradigm shift for me with the new body.
Micro AF adjustment.
Large and beautiful LCD
Live View for precise manual focus when needed
Massive croppability so It is like I have a 40D inside for the reach
Great high ISO
Video when needed (So I don't have to carry a P&S also)

I too think that the 5DIII will come out sooner than not (Depending on Nikon's changes to the D700). Either with better AF and/or modified AF system to allow phase diff AF while the mirror is up (for video). Or it will have to be a 3D (which will create too much market fragmentation for them so it seems unlikely).

However, I do think that one will tire of heavy duty video with this fellow (jerky video unless you have one of those stabilizer rigs, heavy processing needs and all that) and as a still camera primarily this guy shines. I wouldn't have gotten rid of the 20D except that I fell in love with thin DOF 5D and I would not have gotten rid of the 5D (don't need higher ISO or MP) except that I wanted the Micro Adjust AF and did not want repeated trips to canon for AF calibration.

What is neccesary for you will depend on what bugs you about the 5D you have now. Your money, you decide.

Also realize that if you do sell your 5D now, the 5DII's supply situation being the way it is, you might get it after several months.

I know have a 40D, so the step will be even bigger :-).
And here in Europe the supply is actualy very good!
So there are no problems.

It's much money. I know if I'll do this, I gonna be very happy, but the step towards it, is very big for me :-).

Sounds to me that this is a "want", not a "need". If so, then let the funds decide. If you can do it without putting significant strain on the budget, and you think it'll make you happy, then go for it. You only live once...
