My 40D and XSi both needed the date / time set the first time I powered them on. I just received a new 5D and it already had the date / time set. Date was right but the time was 1 hour off.

Did I really get a new camera or is something amis?

Did it prompt you to set the date/time? I think every camera I have bought has prompted me when I turned it on the first time, and I don't think any of them were correct out of the box. What is the file count at?

Where did you buy this "brand new" 5D from?

Could have been set at factory as a QC test or someone had it out of the box to look at before you..

It did not prompt me which was a surprise. First shot was file count 0001. Bought from Adorama. Nothing in the box appeared to have been opened.

Regardless, it sure is a nice camera :-)

Well it didn't set itself. But that doesn't mean it's not a new camera.

Its a new camera but in your situation someone probably open it and set it for you. Well as long as the shutter count is new, you should be fine. When I got my 50D I have to set the time and my shutter count is a big fat O. The box from factory never come sealed so it can be easily open. Then when a store recieve their order from factory some put a seal and some don't. I know amazon doesn't put a seal on their new camera cause when I got mine there's no seal.

Hmmm. Canon is in Japan, so 1 hour makes no sense. Adorama is in New Yawk and you're in Varmint, same time zone. Nope.

Maybe it was set by Adorama before the change to Daylight Savings Time?

Bought mine locally and was prompted to set time/date on powerup, never did look at the shutter count, not sure I know how to. Price locally was same as major online places except for the 5% to Gov. Douglas and I only had to wait 2 days for it to show up, felt good to finally buy local.

I have the same issue for my new bought canon 5D from Adorama too, except my date is 1 day ahead and time is 1 hour ahead. Looks like Japan time, but not entirely sure that's what it is. Anyone has any clue? Thanks.

My suspicion is that your camera is the one out of 1000 that they picked out of the assembly line to check quality.

My thoughts exactly. For some reason the new ones are not sealed when we receive them, (but the recertified ones are!)

Having our warehouse in NJ and the store in NYC, does mean that you can be assured that it wasn't taken out of the box to show to a customer - but obviously, if you have any concerns, you can return it.

Sincerely
