I was looking at the Reuters website and decided to view some of their award winning shots. This one (the first one) -- if I had taken it, I would not have even considered it a keeper -- yet it won an award.

I am baffled! What does this shot have that makes it, not only a keeper, but an award winner?

Take a look at the podium and the shadows and lines from the cabinet and microphones.

Looks like a head and face.

by winning the political catagory, I think it must have something to do with the empty head that the glass represents.

Just an observation.

A lot of these images seem to be award winners because of what it represents as a news photograph. A lot of them aren't brilliant technically but what they're displaying is brilliant.

Just clarifying that I don't agree with what I'm saying about the photos themselves but that's the vibe I'm getting :p

I think the image makes a profound statement, both artistically and politically. That's probably why it won.

Okay.. I do get it now. I probably would have gotten it if the subject were George W. Bush (given how the press liked to portray him as a bumbling idiot -- that is not a comment on Bush, but the press).

Thanks!

Sometimes photos are judged on things beside technical prowess.
