Daughter's School Talent Show ~ C&C

hello. i recently picked up a 70-200 f/2.8 and i'm loving it! i mostly wanted to use it to capture a lot of my daughters school plays & performances on stage w/o the use of any type of strobe.

i mostly shot in Tv@2.8 and ISO ranged from 800-1600. i felt i needed to shoot in Tv due to some fast pace action.

I think its funny you felt like you had to explain why you shot in Tv...... Not laughing at you, just anticipating the "I would have shot this manual" crowd chiming in.......

Hey, I like them. Shooting high school theater is fun cause the lighting is usually mature enough to be interesting, and you can get close enough to the action to grab some nice shots. I dig everything but 3 -- the missing hand is killing me......

Good work -- you will absolutely love this lens!

Some okay action, but some awkward cropping.

lol....i felt i needed to explain cuz' i normally shoot in M, but i really didn't have enough time to "experiment" thus missing some shots. so i just went with what i knew would work.

no, i was front row with limited access. I guess i just didn't keep up with her dancing. Need to pan more along with her.

I like the shots, in some it does seem like you are shooting through a crow but if you where on the first row I guess that is the band? I'm desperately looking to buy a 70-200 2.8 and now a good f4 came into my sights. Not sure if it's a good idea to buy it as I neeeeeed 2.8 for swim season. Looking at your data would f4 suffice for what you shot?

I did a High School play and shot the whole thing from the balcony, with a Canon 24-70 2.8 and a 100 2.8. Results where pretty good for a first time out. But in your case maybe being in the front row you could have gotten away with something wider like the 24-70 2.8.

Do you have a link to more photos, I'm interested to see as I'm thinking of shooting my Niece's dance recital this weekend.

the obsticles in the lower portion of some of images are stage speakers. i was limited in my movement, i did not want to block anyone. i do have a 17-40 but wasn't nearly fast enough for the limited lighting. in your case, i would def go with a 2.8, don't bother with the 4. that's what i did and sold the 4 after a few wks and upgraded immediately to the 2.8.

Thank you for the advise, that is what I think as well I would be flipping the f4 in no time. Sadly I can't afford the 2.8 right now might have to rent it for the weekend. Just had a look at your site, we must be brothers separated at birth same interests it seems. Very nice photos.

I have an old e30 and that is why the 2.8 has to wait a bit extra as a fresh set of Bilstein BTS kit is going in in late June.
