Backfocuses slighly under 3 feet, and then from there out to 10 or so feet it front focuses. Is that the normal behavior when people have issues with this lens?

Is this something sigma can fix or should I continue playing the lottery and return it to B&H and hope for the best?

Sigma can calibrate the lens to fix the focus issues.

That sounds like a very odd issue. I had to go through 3 Sigma 30s to get a properly focusing one, but the first two were fine at close distances and horrendously frontfocused on anything over 6-10 feet away. It was totally worth sending back for another. Yours sounds quite inconsistent, so I'd return and get another...if you get one that just has simple backfocus or frontfocus issues, then send that to Sigma and they'll fix it for you (or you can have them try and fix this one too, if you like).

Again, though, this lens is worth the hassle. Second only to the 35L optically in this range, and it isn't far behind.

I went to about three new and three used Sigma 30 f1.4 (some of them sent to be calibrated) before I found one that satisfied me, I am not that fussy but it has to focus at the wright place.

my sigma 30 focus very accurate, recently i added 35L for FF body, still feel hesitate to sell the sigma though (as sharp as 35L).

Yea its kinda depressing. The few shots I got that were in focus are great and sharp wide open. Im going to call sigma after I fully wake up and see about sending it in for calibration.

My Sigma 30mm f1.4 was perfect right out of the box. This wasn't the case with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 which I returned.
