And another thread of mine... Haven't photographed a lot of shows during the last few months but last and this week have been pretty active. So here are some shots of Solomon Burke, who was in Atak last night.

C&C much appreciated. Little note: these shots are 1D2, ISO 3200. There are some limitations in how much you can do with a ISO 3200 1D2-shot without ruining it. Some shot might have looked somewhat different when it would have been ISO 1600 shots...

Pretty good IQ for ISO 3200.

You didn't capture the "throne" he was on, or the roses?

Nope, too little space and too much people in front of me to be able to do something less close unfortunately.

Well, Anouk, except for the first they are all very, very similar ... and maybe no one knows Solomon which is a problem I seem to have ... if it's not heavy metal death grunge or big time rockers there are very few who comment. And there are only a very few of us who can relate to 1D bodies. Maybe if you were more revealing of yourself so people could bond to you as they have to Rene and Narlus you would get more comments. :-)

Wow Dwight, when I posted this thread I really thought this finally could be an artist a lot of members might know. Somehow I expected you to know the guy aswell...

What has an 1D body to do with the number of comments on my photos? And what do you mean with the "more revealing of yourself"? I comment on threads of other people (at least I try to comment on as much threads of people who regulary post here; I don't really care about the "first gig shot"-threads), I usually *really* try to say something about the shots posted (I'm sorry, but you usually don't say too much about the shots I post) and I've shared some pretty personal issues on my own photography with all of you, so I'm really wondering what I shoud reveal of myself...

Well, nope, never heard of him. Not many have a 1D body so they can't relate to the noise for the 1D body. "More revealing", meant somewhat tongue in cheek, not as an accusation. And yes, I don't say too much on most anyone's posts because there are so many people who do know the artists and who can speak to them better. You will find that I am quite expansive on how to get into this business and a few other topics where there isn't a lot of general knowledge/experience. But I don't question the number of comments I get so that's OK, although it's pretty clear that I have made a lot more comments than most. I was only trying to be responsive to your post. I guess there is no emotionally satisfying answer ... it's one of those existential questions I guess.

But what did you mean with the "René and Narlus"? What do they do what you should recommend me to do aswell?

we offer $ to people who comment on our threads. ;)

i'm not sure what we do. i just toss stuff up and sometime i get less feedback than i'd expect, but that's ok!

btw, i think the last shot is the best and also looks to be one of ones taken @ 1600; maybe you could have sacrificed an ISO stop for a slower shutter speed? man, he's got broad shoulders.

i really like the 1st shot too. beautiful stuff. dwight's comments about too much similiarity between shots 2-7 is valid, i think.

Well, Tim tends to add write-ups of the shows, talk about the bands, talk about the venues and exactly what difficulties he has, talks about his credential issues ... he shares the whole feeling of his experience. Rene give very detailed critiques in which he shares specific suggestions, gives references and links, and generally interacts with most everyone. Do you not see an overall style among those who seem to get more comments?

Hmmm...

Correct me if I'm wrong but it may have been a pretty long time since I've seen one of those long and detailed suggestions in a PA thread by René.

Not sure what to say about the bands/venues/difficulties and stuff though... I can remember you saying:

Quite a range of style! I don't think you need to explain yourself as you've been here quite a while and we all know you're a young girl with sometimes red hair, Rene's buddy from time to time, and an artsy shooter! :-) If we ever make it over to the Netherlands we'll make sure to see you.

...when I felt the need to tell you guys something more about the show...

I was only offering suggestions to your query on comments. Take what works for you or nothing. I like you and your work so I really have no clue why you don't get more comments. I am not omniscient even if I do sometimes come across as overbearing. And I cannot defend what may seem like contradictory comments by me ... must be my mood swings, eh? :-)

Edit: I don't think you need to explain yourself ... UNLESS YOU WANT MORE COMMENTS. Must have left that part off. :-)

Narlus, thanks for your reply. I understand the critics on the shots being too much of the same, I might just take out 3 (or something) next time :)
I lowered my ISO during the show for a few shots, but even on ISO 3200 my shutter speeds were spot on so I changed it back to ISO 3200 as soon as I noticed ISO 1600 might have given me too much movement.

Edit: @ Dwight: thanks for your suggestions anyways. I was really surprised by the lack of comments on this series, since I expected many members to know this guy. I once have been discussing a thread with René some time ago, about the lack of comments on another thread, on which he replied something like "well, they just might not know the band and just not view the photos because of that or something". So when I shot Solomon Burke I decided to give it a shot, post a thread and see how many replies I would get. And then only one reply (and not only one, but that one being from René) is pretty disappointing ;)

OK.

I know who he is and pretty much everyone should also. It's a pity that many fans of music have no idea of the real classic influences on most everything that has come later.

I look at the series a bit differently. I like the noise because of the subject. Sometimes a classic look should have a classic subject...at least, but not only for, artistic expression.

As for the lack of comments on many topics these days, it confuses me. When I first appeared on this forum, I asked for feedback and expected to be critiqued. I wasn't disappointed. I have noticed over the past 12 months that a lot of new members only comment on performers that they know or post only on topics that they created. It seems a shame since there is a lot of great experience here.

Ski, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.

Funny what you say about the noise and the "classic look", to me it always will be dirty-but-sometimes-usable ISO 3200 on an 1D mark II I think ;)
