How usable is this without live view even as an option? I can understand running without a tripod, but how necessary is LV for focus/composition?

I use mine with a 1DsMkII which has no live view and I have no problems. The optical viewfinder on my camera is quite good though so I can't say how it might be to use on a lesser body.

Keep in mind though that almost any outdoor shot you take with this lens is bound to come out in nice sharp focus by simply relying on the focus gage on the lens barrel or making use of the AF confirmation beep on your camera prior to any tilting or shifting.

Live view might only be more of a must have if you want to achieve a lot of selective focus/blur effects and to that end, the 17 is the least giving of that feature compared to the 24 and 45mm TS lenses.

Cheers!

I use this about 50% of the time without live view for architecture and real estate and it's pretty hard to miss the focus unless you're doing funky shifts. Tilting isn't a problem and the focus confirm is spot on.

I think this thread has the most consistent high quality photos of any thread I've followed.
It truly shows what an outstanding tool in the hands of outstanding photographers can produce.

I agree. This lens is top notch. I can't wait to share some of my images from my recent trip. On a side note, I never used my Zeiss 21 on my trip. That goes to show you how uninterested I am with that lens. The three UW lenses I used where the 17 TS, 24 TS II, and the Nikon 14-24. :)

i've never been one who cared too much about sharpness, but every time i look at a 100% crop from this lens, especially when i'm shooting interiors, i am blown away. makes my 17-40 look like there was vaseline on the front element.
