I have a photo of the same lighthouse.. stupid people wouldn't get out of the way.. :) Your's is much better ;)

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone. I had one other photographer walking around all over the place so I just sat on a bench and waited for him to leave. He left right before the colors got really nice so I didn't complain.

JMarsh, love the pier shot. You should post that in my "Post your best pier shots" thread. :)

I threw it in there :)

I have been debating on this lens. So, my question is, do you think you could have got everything in focus with this shot? I'm guessing this would require a huge amount of tilt so, probably not. But, then again, being a 24mm, stopping down might just get you there. Got a pic with everything sharp?

Bob

Edit: just realized it was with a 2x TC so will that reduce the range of effective tilt?

Just realized I could post this here.. Was shooting the chefs for a restaurant opening in Chicago, this is one of the un-posed "do-whatever-and-I'll-just-shoot-it" shots.. another POTN member here let me borrow the lens, and it was my first time using tilt-shift.. obviously the focal plane isn't perfect, but I kind of like the look of it..

What Annie said. Plane of focus works just right, and the quartet's sightline is great - keeps me moving across the frame.

Combined with your sidewalk shot from the 135 thread, nice contributions!

The amount of tilt you need to get the full range in focus depends on the focal length of the lens AND the height of the lens above the horizontal. This set-up was a bit different to normal landscape as the subject was on my kitchen worktop and I had the camera literally a few centimetres above it (on a tripod). An additional complication is that I had the camera/lens (before any tilt) pointing downwards to get the tray of decorations in the viewfinder. I tried using shift but just got too much of the room in the shot.

So taking all that into consideration (and I was effectively using a 48mm lens - the longer the focal length the greater the tilt required), the answer to your questions are, yes, I could get the whole subject in focus (see attached), and no, it didn't require much tilt (maybe 2° because I had the camera tilted downwards). Your last question is harder to answer as you have two times the focal length so to me it just seems different. Maybe someone else will chime in on the technicalities.

The main thing IMHO is to echo what everyone says about the Tilt-Shift lenses - use LiveView and learn from what you see. Also (something I don't do :o) is write down what you did with each photo. Unfortunately, the EXIF does not record the amount of Tilt, Shift or if TC used!

Annie, thanks. I think I'm going to have to rent this lens and see how it works for me.

I should but I don't either

But in defense, I would say that experience will begin to guide roughly how much tilt to apply and at what rotation to create the plane of focus that one desires to achieve. Nevertheless recording information is useful if one plans to revisit the same site during different season or to recreate a setup, and therefore encouraged.

^ I like this too. I like how the road carries on along the frame to the right. Makes a nice composition.

Here's one similar to a previous just liked the water in this one a lot more. Tried to go a little brighter also.

Thanks Annie. By the way, I've been waiting anxiously at the end of the driveway everyday since I've been home

I actually prefer this one since the colors are more natural here. The previous version had a bit of a magenta cast to it. :) Print and hang worthy.

Thanks man, yeah I think the other shot was from me hand holding the reverse grad hitech and I put it over more of the scene than I liked. It works wonders for the sky but its tough to color correct.
