While out on a walk today. All handheld wide open. Still trying to "see" the focal plane via the viewfinder. Still having problems. I see the plane in a different position than the final image.

Thanks :-)

re seeing the focal plane I actually end up using live view whenever I'm using this lens tilted, so I can zoom in and see just where it is putting the focal plane (even handheld)...as tilting also throws out the exposure meter using live view (set up for as shot) allows me to see what I'm getting and adjust exposure before pressing the shutter.

I have not tried that. I usually only use live view to check focus, then switch it off to take the picture. But then I am using a tripod as well. Never could get used to taking the picture with live view. Call me old school. If 2 years with a DSLR can be called old school.

Thanks. Skill trying to get a hang of it. The tilt is very subtle and hard to see sometimes. I can't wait to try some pano shift pictures. Just need to find a subject worth taking extra wide. Actually, might have come up with something. Will let you know. Cheers!

12 frame stitch, even after hacking and cropping the original can still be seen (link below) at 7794 x 5316. What a lens!

Nice work. It's impressive how one can get medium format image quality when doing panoramas with this lens.

Love the dragon rolls at Ye's Sushi.

With this 12 image pano did you just use the shift or both tilt & shift?

Love sushi, but I still haven't been there yet.

I didn't use tilt at all, just shift. Tried to get my camera as level as possible and then just shift in every direction as far as I could.

These pictures with a vertical focal plane may well illustrate what the lens can do, but they're actually putting me off. I don't want to spend $2000+ on a lens that can do party tricks but on one that can get me pictures that are even closer to what my eye sees.

To use these TS-E lenses effectively must the camera be mounted on a tripod? Or is it possible to get a worthwhile effect hand-held?

What your eye sees is boring. In my opinion all photographs are not 100% how we see. Any image with a blurred background falls into that category. We do not get that sort of separation with our own eyes. A TS-E lens is either for you or not. I think they are great because they break the fixed parallel focal plane that ALL other Canon lenses have. It is a great tool to capture something different. To emphasis to the viewer exactly what you want them to see. Again, like a portrait with shallow DOF. Same thing.

TS-E lenses do not have to be mounted on a tripod. Same as any other lens. Maybe a little more patients and practice required.

That's all up to you.
Because you can use it for a vertical focus plane doesn't mean you must use it for that.
Tilt/shift lenses are far more versatile than just those "party tricks".

You can use these lenses without a tripod. I did that many times.
It's more convenient to use one though.
