Eight months ago I bought a Xsi,18-55 IS,75-300 4-5.6 and Photo Shop Ele. 6
The 18-55 made me happy, and elements 6 also is great.About three weeks ago I started shooting RAW and everything got better.Yesterday I got a great deal on a 70-200 f4,Tamron 1.4 T.C and Lightroom 2.3. WOW!!
Even shots thst I PP'd with E6 can be alot better using Lr 2.3 and an L lens is a new world.Next step will be a monopod and a 430 EXII.Practice will make you better but L sure helps.

Gear List : 1D MK II n,Gripped XSi,70-200 f4,300 f4 IS,Canon 24-105 f4,35 f2 IS,EF 50 1.8 MK I,EF-S 10-22,Canon 1.4 II Extender,Canon 25mm Ext Tube,YN 468/460 II,RF 602's

Lightroom 2.3 is fantastic, isn't it? Enjoy! I strongly recommend online classes. I learned a lot, a lot quicker than I would have learned on my own.

Sounds like you are on the right path. Don't be afraid to make "mistakes." Sometimes the shot you think was horrible, turns out to be one of the best from the shoot!

+1.

I think it's kinda funny when people say they learn PS on their own by playing around. Yes, you can learn that, but you're not getting your money's worth as it contains so much stuff.
