I have a 17-55 IS with a third party lens hood. Nice hood, sturdy, flocked, etc. Sometimes when shooting the lens hood rotates and if I don't catch it I get part of the hood in the image (corners). I'm not sure if it's the hood or the lens causing the problem. It may be that I need a Canon hood, and if so I'm fine with buying one. I just thought I'd throw it out here first and see if a) These lenses are known for loose hood issues b) There is a way to fix a loose hood c) a Canon hood will definitely solve my issue (before I spend the money to find out it doesn't).

my 24-70L hood does the same thing....it has loosened over time. i may replace the hood someday.

Depending on how loose it really is, you could try a couple layers of nail polish or model paint on the "threads" of the hood to snug up the fit. It will wear off over time but can be re-applied as needed.

Something else I have used in similar situations when a thing needed snugging is just plumbers teflon tape. It is the cleanest option but some experimenting is needed to get the right amount of it in there. Nice thing about the teflon tape is you can always carry a roll in your bag to make a fast fix when the tape falls apart eventually. The other nice part of the tape is you can put it on the lens threads easily and it's clean of you want to remove it...

cool...hope they work for ya. :D I swear, next to gaffers & duct tape, plumbers tape is about one of the most handy things around.

A very small dab of clear RTV silicone over the hood's thread (remove the hood, and create just a little bump on the thread), then let it sit overnight to fully cure. This stuff will eventually come off, but it's sort of soft or rubbery, and won't damage plastics.

Forget the glue and paints and such. All you need to do is dimple the plastic bayonet of the hood... I did this on one of my hoods several years ago and it's never been loose again.
