Here is a perfect example of why this guy is an idiot:
...just never try to bring more than a camera and lens or two anyplace at once...

I, and every other photog I know, would be screwed taking one body to a shoot.

....unless you're shooting something that doesn't matter to your bottom line. Then if you have an equipment problem, its no big deal.

I guess this guy would really ring Mr. Rockwell's "buffoon" alarm, wouldn't he?

Took the words right out of my mouth. Total douche bag.

You might be giving him too much credit, a douche bag can be useful.

I'm sorry for blowing up. Ken Rockwell actually has some decent advice for a beginning photographer (such as myself), but I can't stand when ANYONE seemingly talks down to people. That's what it seems like he does. His website audience seems like it's gear for beginneers, yet he throws in ridiculous articles like these which is more acceptable for talking to his buddies in a bar. How much a pro can Rockwell be if he has to take donations to keep his website up. Not to mention that his website is seriously outdated like it is stuck in AOL 1997 mode. Build a modern, dynamic website Ken. And remember who your audience is.

Don't you see all the "pros" laughing in the background?

I see he's got a growing family, I wonder if he uses a monopod to achieve that too

In one aspect, he is stating his opinion as to what annoys him. Hey, there are things that annoy me too... things that really are personal preference for others and/or really don't matter in the grand scheme of thing.

The difference seems to be that I understand that my opinions are just that and not necessarily entirely rational. He seems to feel that his opinion leans more toward fact and he attempts to back this up by what "pros" allegedly think and do.

And to address Gentleman Villain's excellent point... being an amateur is not a bad thing. There are many amateurs who do excellent work simply because they enjoy it as a hobby and speed or efficiency or making money or fashion sense matters to them not one bit.

i wanted to thank you for sharing the link but that was just about the worst reading ive done in a while! :p its worse than being rick-rolled! :D

WORSE??? Getting Rick Rolled is sweet!!

Mr. Rockwell must not inspect too many wedding photogs working with his little "don't use a midrange zoom its worthless" banter. Good thing we think for ourselves Ken...

No kidding. :D

I usually try to stay away from them, but I'm in a mood today.

It's almost too good (read: ridiculous) to be true...

I must be an amateur, because I do just about everything he's got listed, except the backpack thing. I tried backpacks and didn't like them.

Sorry to say, but Ken Rockwell and Fred Miranda are both two people I would love to smash in the face with my camera, I'd gladly take the loss in gear. These are the people who think they're the stuff, and they're certainly not. You can be a pro or an amateur, and nobody has the right to tell you what you can or can't do. People like this need to be removed from society. People who have nothing better to do but sit at home and think up stupid ignorant stuff like this. You can laugh at me all you want, I'm doing what I enjoy. I could care less what you say, and i could care less if you laugh at me. Better people with higher intelligence have laughed at me, and it didn't phase me, what makes you think you can?

Here's a few of my select phrases built just for situations like this:

"Sad truth is that people don't remember where they came from, they're only locked on to where they're going. Single mind, single vision. I get my joy from knowing a lot of people get rear-ended that way..."

"Quite frankly I don't care if you are God Himself. If you need to toot your own horn , you aren't as good as you think you are."

why don't' you read ALL his web site and THEN come here to write some pertinent stuff ...

Because seeing somebody spout off useless crap like that is enough to keep me from putting any stock into anything they have to say.

The only stupid question is the one that goes unasked - Photographers shoot to thrill, not to kill
