have any of you classic 5D owners traded yours for a 50D? and have you regretted it?

here's my situation, i recently made the mistake of upgrading my 30D to the 50D :D --- and GOD do I love the 50D! i am contemplating trading my 5D for another 50D. not sure if im going to regret the move. and please, nobody mention the 5D Mark II -- its a little too expensive for me right now.

your thoughts are appreciated. TIA!

PS - if i do go the dual 50D route, i will also have to trade my 17-40 for an APS-C ultra-wide. (i.e.: Tokina 11-16, 12-24, or the Sigma 12-24, Canon 10-22)

seeing as you have both you are in a better position to judge than most.Personally I would like two different bodies and keep the 5D until the 5DMKII comes down in price.

I have never heard of that one. Considering going from a professional full frame to an amateur cropped sensor. I guess go with what you need. Anytime I am doing serious, paying work it is with my 5D. I consider my 40D (similar to 50D) as back-up to my 5D. To be completely honest I do go to the 40D for fast moving sports.

But so far this year I probably haven't fired a couple thousand clicks with the 40 and 20 times that with my 5D.

I agree. You have both. Who better to know what will work for you.

If you have both, and somehow enjoy the 50D more, go for it. I'd never make that trade, though.

Not something I would do, but if it works better for you, do it.

I also agree that its a strange question, as you own both cameras, so you can compare and decide. there is no mystery involved there. its like saying I have tried strawberry milkshake and chocolate milkshake. which one do you think I should go with?

for one thing, its the person behind the camera that makes it "professional". i too have used the 5D (backed up with my old 30D) on paid gigs. but its not my go to. theyre both tools and i use what's best for the job.

now with the 50D, it has incredible image quality rivalling, if not surpassing, that of the 5D (of course this is my opinion). Noise control is amazing and is at least a stop better than the 5D. what i would definitely miss if i do decide to go that route is the viewfinder and the DOF that you cant get with crop bodies. ARRRRRGH, decisions decisions! :p

ultimately, i think the answer is the 5D Mark II. there are things in the 5D that are just irreplaceable i think. why does the 50D have to be so good! :p

I thought the only pro canon bodys began with the 1 series. The 5D was the first prosumer full frame body. The 50D is in fact a 1.6 crop body. But being a cropper as you put it has nothing to do with being a pro or as you say amature body. The 1DMKIII is also a 1.3 crop as well as the 1DMKII and 1DMKIIN.They are pro bodys also.

I think the 50D is a pro-sumer body also.Cheers and good luck with either new body you choose. Johnathan ;)

The 50D have more resolution than the 5D and it show in the picture, I think this is what hook you, but better quality image? not sure. The NR in the 50D are more up to date, but even if you have some noise with the 5D it's finer, and less detail are take off by the NR program. Take off the NR in the 50D and take a picture with both camera at ISO 1600 and look...

whatever floats your boat. i would view these as two different cameras and each accel in different areas. but again, whatever blows your skirt up. i wouldnt REPLACE my 5d with a 50d, but would consider it a nice suppliment.

That is a tough choice. There is a lot to be said about having 2 of the same bodies. You can change up with no mistakes in camera layout of menu operation. But I have some questions. As a former 50D owner I can easily say I fell in love with that body. The screen and features were just amazing. Where I fell out of love with the body is its addiction to only the best of glass and its IQ.
1. How long have you had the 50D?
2. How do you feel about the sharpness of the images compared to your 5D?
3. Do you print very large?
4. Do you ever feel the need to shoot beyond f/8?
There are advantages to the crop body over the full frame and the other way around as well.
Personally I like to have bodies that have different strengths and weaknesses. The 50D can not compete with the 5D in low light. The 50D only uses the best portion of the glass and adds some times much needed reach to a lens. The full frame adds that much needed width to a wide lens. IMO there is not a UWA for a crop sensor to match the 17-40 ( or the 16-35mm) on a full frame IQ or build quality wise. When Canon makes a 10-20mm L series lens then they will have my attention. But like many others have said you are in more of a position to judge these two bodies since you have both in hand right now.
