Really depends on the look you're trying to achieve.

I just did a shoot for a dance company and they wanted a white backdrop for the team photos. In this case, seamless paper would not be wide enough, had to use cloth. We did use seamless for the individual shots which were full body shots.

Too many questions unanswered.

What size do you need?
Permanent studio or portable?
Do you have a nearby retailer, and a vehicle that can haul a long roll of paper?

Paper is easier to work with due to absence of wrinkles so you can use lower power for background lights, which in turn helps to eliminate unwanted reflection on the subject's face from the backround. Besides it is usually 'whiter' than a cloth. It is also cheaper.
But it is far less portable, and wears out faster.
I personally only use paper.

Using in "portable studio". I'm starting to do a little bit of on-location studio kinda thing. "We come to you" kinda thing. Plus I'm expecting to be doing lots of kids portraits... I guess that would answer my questinon.. :)

Well the basic pros & cons have already been mentioned, so let me give you another option for individual portraits:

Botero collapsible background

Those things will hang on a single stand, setup and collapse in seconds, easy to carry.

I've been thinking about getting one of those, but lots of times, I'll want to have full body shot or a shot of a kid sitting and want bg to cover the whole frame.

Gonna get me a muslin!

Thanks!
